[IMG] Hey folks, I'm on level 3 of Spellhold (the part with all the puzzles) and my game keeps stopping and displaying this message

    Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library

    Runtime Error!

program: C:/ProgramFiles/BG2 (or something like that)

    abnormal program termination

I'm patched and playing with no mods installed.

The only other problem I've had with the game is going into Spellhold from Brynnlaw when the cutscene wouldn't work and the game froze (once I switched off the cutscenes it worked fine).

I don't have a scooby as to what's going on so any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I assume that you have a full install? If so, a file or two might have failed to copy correctly (happenend a couple of times to me when actually trying to enter Spellhold).

I found the file and copied it from the CD to the hard drive and that did the trick. You could try the same.

It's not a full install as I couldn't get it to go past the spellhold cutscene. I've tried copying that file from the disc but every time I even click on it the hourglass pointer comes up and I have to restart. The file is MovCD3.bif .

I've tried right clicking all the other files but none of them have the same effect. This only happens at certain places on the map I've realised, like the goblin storeroom and the room with the faces. I've also noticed some of the combat sounds aren't there in the battles.

would it make a difference if I copy all the files onto the hard drive? (whereabouts would I copy them to btw?)

If you can't copy the file from the cd to the hard drive, then your disc seems to be damaged (that file).

Is that the only file you're having problems with or are there more?

You could try making an .iso file of the disc and do a full install from there. That might work, but I'm not sure. If the disc is busted, it's busted.

If all else fails, maybe you could have someone send you the problematic files, and you could use them instead of your own.
I don't think this qualifies as a legality issue.

I can send you the file(s), just PM me.
(I have my SoA discs here, but if the file is from ToB, I can't send it until the 6th of May, as my ToB disc is in another city).

EDIT: It just occured to me: How big is the file, anyway? I have no experience in splitting files, but if it's sendable, my offer stands.

The disc does look a little damaged. The MovCD3.bif seems to be the only bad file, but that wouldn't affect the gameplay after I'm past the video would it? This only seems to affect one area, so I suppose the file for that area is damaged as well. I'm not very technically minded so I have no idea how to find out which one that is, other than it's Spellhold Level 3 according to the SP online walkthrough. Thanks for the help so far guys.

The Kilted Crusader: The area you are in is AR1512, the level with the patients in cells is AR1515, and the other part of the maze is AR1513.

However, if the only file you can't copy is the MovCD3.bif, then I suppose that it could be causing the problems, since .bif is an archive extension apparently, so it could contain more than just the movie files. (It could, I'm not saying it does.)

Not the smartest solution, but the only one I know: You could try simply copying all the files on the CD to your hard drive (anywhere, desktop for instance) and seeing if there are more damaged ones. Those you cannot copy, are probably damaged. (Work partially, folder by folder, if your computer freezes when you reach damaged ones. This way you'll pinpoint them faster.)

I still think it's that one file that's causing it. Having a good copy should help.

I think if the disk is damaged there could be problems with reading even the undamaged files. You would be better off in all circumstances with a full install, if you have the necessary space on your hard drive.

I thought I'd best update this. It was definately a damaged disc. With a new disc (thanks Cal :) ) it's working fine now. Thanks for everybody's help on this, I appreciate it and I'll be playing with a full install from now on.
