[IMG] It angers me to no avail.

why does hot topic sell "authenic goth punk mini skirts with safety pins" for fifty dollars?
why do these mallgawths see fit to wear makeup in the daytime and waste good clothing just to hang out at the foodcourt at their local mall?
Why is it that some people equate goths with S&M???

I mean..what does whipping each other have to do with the music or even literary history? I like to think of myself as somewhat openminded and tolerant, but the idea of drawing blood, humiliation or/and pain for sexual gratification is abhorrent to me.

For awhile I stopped going to the goth themed nights at certain clubs here in nyc when I lost someone close to me some time ago. Just didnt feel the same w/o her.

anyway.. I went back to Downtime's "Batcave" last friday night. Yeesh. Everywhere I turned, either some smarmy brat from the 'burbs had his/her face painted like ICP or The Crow or some weirdo slut dressed up in a bondage suit with some loser wearing a leather mask being led by a leash.

gawd..now I know how some punk fans feel when they see a wanna-be skater who got into the "scene" cause of Avril Lavigne.

to anyone who goes to goth clubs, tell me your thoughts! am I alone in hating these vampiric, S&M practicing, wannabes??

Goths tend to be incredible silly, in their strive to be special. They end up being even more mainstream and homogenous than they were before they started paint their themselves.

As for S&M it is not really tied to any subculture and there is so many scale differences and such that your very judgemental view of it sounded quite narrowminded.

Seems to me that the only way to be an original individual these days is to not try. Sit on your ass, obey the rules and the law, don't make any statements. No-one does that anymore.

They're all so obssessed with being different, they all end up the same.

I sometimes look like a crossbreed of a lawyer and a vampire, does that count as a wannabe goth?
I wear black clothes and dark makeup sometimes when I feel like it because I feel like it, and because I happen to like the colour. But I feel no need to make ebvery item in my wardrobe PVC or leather. And most of the time I look somewhat normal.. just a bit scary. Am I such a horrible person?

After watching Queen of the Damned last night, I had to say this: If what you mean is anything like the stuff going on in the so-called movie, then I have to agree. I personally have no experience with goth clubs, seeing as I don't think there are any wehre I live (Cold, far-off North...) and even if there were, my so-called living arrangements would prevent it. (So what if I am underage? :D I can mindwhammy any bouncer in town :D )

To you, maybe. But not to all of us.
(And yes, feel free to take that in any way you want...)

And, for the amusement of us all... not for the squamish, though... Goth Lines to Use in Bed

    (Who gave HIM the keys?)

I used to go to clubs in black trousers and white French-cuffed shirt with upper buttons undone plus black golf beneath. And my hair reached the shirt's collar, twisting there a bit :shake:

Ah, I forgot to add I was dead-pale due to lack of sleep and being incaffeinated :D .

I have never been into the scene, but as a teacher I've seen lots of kids do this sort of thing. I see it, for the most part, as a pathetic cry for attention, a desperate attempt to get Mommy and Daddy to notice them. I also agree with the individuality leading to conformity argument -- I find it funny when these stupid little kids yap on and on about "being an individual", "I'm a rebel!", "I don't listen to anybody" (that last said with an incredibly pompous and arrogant tone, as if it's a positive character trait to shut your brain off) and then they go out and fall for the commercial line of some no-account subculture (goth isn't the only one). I guess it's a part of growing up.

I wear black, but not the all out spike torque with dog collar bracelets and fish netting. I wear a pair of black or blue jeans with a Metallica/Led Zep/Black Sabbath/Judas Priest/Smashing Pumpkins shirt. I consider myselfa metal fan, but it ****s me when people start to make crucifix signs at me and avoid me like I have leprocy. Its a bloody shirt! Goths can do what they want, but as long as they don't ruin my standing as a law abiding citizen with their bad ass satan reputation.

Well, since goths are now so abundant, won't that not serve as a way to express oneself as an individual?

[IMG] I tend to favor black clothes as well, pissing my friends off to no end.

Reason 1: No one will ever say your clothes don't match.

Reason 2: When you spill your coffee, it isn't that obvious.

Reason 3: They're a hell lot easier to clean.

As for being goth...nah...I don't think I'm one. Yes, I like metal music but I favor rock as well. Also, I'm not really into all that body piercing stuff. (Sticking knives into other people's eyes YES, but putting pieces of metal through your skin for fun? I'll pass.)

And one other thing...leave the makeup and lipstick to the ladies, guys. Seriously.

PS: I cannot abide bad poetry, hence, I'm no goth.

PPS: Let the goths do as they will, Gabriel. They're no worse than the 'sk8ters', jocks, britney spears/assorted boy or girl band admirers. Each to their own, though I would never mind black lipstick on a girl. ;)

I have to admit that I once had designs to be a bit of a Goth in high school. Not really attitude wise, since I thought the goth 'group' was really kinda stupid, and I always wondered about the guys...
But I was terribly attracted to the clothes. Not the pale white makeup thing, or the black just to wear black thing, but when you start getting into the dresses...
    *hugs the wanna-be vampire dresses*
And I actually was really depressed too, does that count? Though I acted really bright and cheerful constantly.
Besides that, though, the goth movement really does get on my nerves somewhat. But, as everyone else is saying, so does every pre-formed 'clique' that requires you to have a certain set of rule before you're allowed to be a part. When you allow yourself to conform to one idea because you think you're using it to escape conformity, then your biggest issue is what shrink you're going to use when the real world hits, I think.

[IMG] What annoys me the most is when Im asked what type of music I listen to, I get sometimes odd looks when I say I enjoy goth. "Oh! Do you wear fangs? What about PVC jumpsuits don't they itch? Is it true all goth women are sluts who like to drink blood? Are you satanic?"

    It never ends.

Who says goth males have to be whiny, effette, limp wristed fops? Who says goth has to be about vampires and other silly **** like whipping and wearing masks...

    Bah I say! :D

Any fellow goths out there who agree with me that mall-vampires and S&M shouldn't be mixed in with the scene?

You seem like a cool guy, GabrielNYC, and you and I have gotten along just great. So these links (also from my 2nd favorite site) may or may not piss you off even more, though they aren't meant to. I'm not sure whether they will support or enflame your arguement, because they're just some dude's opinion. They may, however, add a little fire to this thread. Enjoy.

When asked, don't say you like "goth," because that leads people to assume that you are "a goth." Instead, say you like industrial. Most, if not all bands associated with goth culture are truly industrial music, anyway. Sisters of Mercy, Skinny Puppy, Nine Inch Nails, Ministry, etc. - all industrial. The truly 'goth' bands like Type O Negative, Thrill Kill Cult, and Marylin Manson can all fit into other genres, too.

Basically, if you don't want to be associated with that scene, don't even use the term "goth." It's evolved into something bored, stupid or emotionally screwed teenagers do to be rebels and get attention, and NO ONE takes them even remotely seriously. If you were truly goth, you would detest labels anyway. Be into what you're into, but do so because you like it. I love rock music, but I don't tell people I'm "a rocker." Because anything these days has it's segment of followers who do it because they think it will help them belong, nothing more.

Kinda like the old saying, "If you have to tell people you're important, then you're not." Well, going out of your way to advertise that you're a dark, deep, artistic, creature-of-the-night, misunderstood, society-shunning, black nail polish wearing, vampire wannabe, human embodyment of the 'dark side,' is so unoriginal it's not even funny. Well, actually it's hilarious how unoriginal it is. You ask them why they do it and they'll say something to the effect of "I'm not gonna be like those stupid cattle and dress like Britney Spears." Cattle, huh? So you're saying you want to be different and original? Well, then don't be a goth, because guess what...if there's a sub-culture surrounding it, it's a fad, which is anything but original. If you really want to be original, wear nothing but a potato sack, kleenex boxes for shoes, strap a rubber chicken to your head and listen only to music you write yourself using instruments you invented and hand-made yourself. Then you can sit back and bask in your own originality. Idiots.

Those kids you refer to who shop at Hot Topic to dress like vampires, yet pay for the clothes with Daddy's credit card and go home to their white-picket fence neighborhoods? What they're doing is the social equivilant of a dog dressing up like a cat just so it can lick its own ass in front of its owners.

There some funny goth bed lines in there, and there are some that scare me.

Then there's a few that disturb me.

Other than that, GOTH CHICKS NEED LOVE, TOO!

I've never called myself goth and I totally deny it every time someone tells me I am. Yes I like goth music above all others and vampires and other things that the usual stereotypical goth likes. But I'm not doing that stuff to get attention or anything. I listen to goth music because I like it not because everyone else says I'm goth or whether or not I wanna be a goth. Yeah I dress like them some of the time but thats because I love black. I also love leather. Especially on women... Anyways the point I'm trying to make is not all people who look goth are actual goths. I'm not a goth. Hell no! I'm the average kid who has a really bad problem with society, a short temper and a really bad case of phengophobia. Thats why you'll only catch me outside at night and in the bed at day with the curtains drawn shut. Call me strange but I like all that S&M stuff too...

Hmm, well here are my personal views. I like extreme metal, heavey metal, black metal, death metal, speed metal, industrial, rock, grunge, electronica, and some hip-hop. So, you can see i mainly like metal.

I've always believed in dressing how i feel comfortable, not how i'm expected to dress (except for work, as i don't get much choice there). I mainly wear black clothes, normally either black jeans or long black shorts, and black t-shirts, shirts, or band tops. I've never personally felt comfortable with the idea of wearing goth clothes, and as such, i never have worn them. Quite simple.
Not to say i diss or mock perople for doing so. I happen to find goth chicks very attractive, and normally far more agreable than 'townie' girls.
One thing that does annoy me is what happened to me the other day. A friend and I were in a metal club and saw two goth chicks. We both agreed that they were well attractive. One of them stopped by a mirror near the dance floor to sort out their makeup, then, walked into the GUYS toilet. Then, when IT came out, only then did we realise it was a GUY. Fortunately everyone else who we asked later thought it was a guy too. But when guys make themselves look like chicks, i don't like it as i get confused with what is what, so to speak.

Wear what feels comfortable. If that happens to be goth, punk, gucci or whatever, then so be it. It's no one person's right to tell you otherwise.

Oh yeah, S&M is good by me too. That's just me, what can i say. I don't think that way because society says yes or no, but because I feel that way. I wouldn't go as far as some of the extremes though (suffocation and testicle trampling though. But if you like that, then so be it.)

Testicle trampling? Oooh OUCH!! Nah that's in the "I want to kill myself by having sex" genre. Same with exchanging blood and all that other freaky stuff(whipping is fine as long as its not too hard) Goth chicks... *DROOOOOOOOOOOL!* need I say more?? Probably but who cares? You people probably do but oh well. You can't have everything.
