I know this has been discussed ad nauseam on the boards before, but when I search the forum for "solo" I get a bajillion hits to look through. But my questions are fairly short and sweet so hopefully someone will deign to answer it.

I'm considering starting a solo game for the first time, but I'm wondering about how the choice of class will affect what quests can be done. If I do pure solo, no NPCs at all, isn't it impossible to do either the Planar Sphere or Trademeet quests - at least the non-evil solutions? Are there any other quests that can't be completed (besides the NPC quests...duh)? Also, what about locked doors? I'm pretty sure I remember some locked doors in Firkraag's dungeon for instance that you have to pick/Knock in order to continue. If your character can't pick or Knock, are you just out of luck and unable to finish that dungeon?

First of all. Your best class choise for soloing is Fighter/thief/mage. I know someone disagrees with me, but I think it is. Maybe you could drop off that fighter to get more levels in thief/mage.

Trademeet quests don't require any NPC's.
I think it is totally acceptable to take Valygar with you to open the planar sphere door and then kick him out.
If you don't have lock picking or knock, you could always force those door open. Just attack them they will open..usually. Don't tell me you are going to finish the game solo without lock picking, knock or melee. :D
I'm playing thief/mage right now and I was going to play solo, but since it was my first time, I decided to take my party along until I get out of Athkatla. After that is solo all the way.

In Trademeet, don't you have to have a druid (Cernd or Jaheria) in your party so they can challenge Faldorn? I know about the evil way to finish Trademeet by poisoning the grove and all, but I don't want to do that.

Just go into the cell where Cernd is. Tell him to wait for you in the druid grove. When you meet him there, tell him that he should challenge Faldorn and that you would just like to observe.

I think you could summon a demon which "accidentally" kills Valygar. Don't know if you lose rep that way.

Anyway, when you kill Valygar with your hands, you don't lose rep either.

Cernd doesnt have to be in your party. You get a dialouge option that says cernd will fight you faldorn. Then the screen blacks out and dialouge starts again saying automatically cernd won and thats that. You dont get exp for killing faldorn, thats it.

I didn't know about Cernd fighting automatically. Handy to know :) Play a character your comfortable with. Me, I take a thief multiclass alot now (either mage or fighter) but I hack my chars to give a kit or school to get more enjoyment out of the game. Fighter/mage/thief is a good class to solo with if your new to the game or have only completed it once or twice with a party, but my first time through solo I think I used a sorcerer (a much loved solo class by many). Do a serch if you are unsure of good spell picks if you are unfamiliar with arcane spells. If that doesen't suit, try a cleric/mage which is a good contender to the 'best spellchucker' throne.

As for the taking Valygar and other NPC's - its ok if you don't mind splitting XP and don't use them for anything except presence. eg. Jaheira being added for a few minutes to get the ring of wizardry (cheesy, I know) etc.
