OK. Can someone help explain Saving throws to me? Is having a higher base saving throw better or worse, and what's their range? 1 thru 20?

the lower the number of your saving throw stat the better (like armour class). Not exactley sure how it works though as I seem to remember having negative values (could be wrong) which would mean I always save on a throw against a 20 side dice. Anyway low value is good.

Saving throws are the number over which you have to roll on a 20 sided die [d20] in order to save against a particular peril, be it paralyzation, poison, petrification, death effects, etc...

For instance if your save vs. paralyze/poison/death was 14, you would have to roll higher and thus have a worse chance of saving than if your p/p/d was say 9. AKA lower = better.
