I've been speaking a new language lately. You could say that I've always spoken it, in fact everybody speaks it. It's universal with a few different accents. I've just recently become aware what a powerful tool for expression it is and I am using it to communicate. Body language.
By altering your stance you change the way the world looks at you and how you feel about yourself. I'm small, just under 5 feet. Blond hair, blue eyes - hardly threatening. It's interesting how people around me react when I change my body position.
In a public place with people around: Standing with calves lightly crossed thumbs hooked in the loops of my jacket and my hands visible, leaning against a door frame. Relaxed but aware. At the bus-stop : Feet slightly parted, hands in pockets with the thumbs showing outside - dominant, don't mess with me. In personal space: Half lidded eyes and slightly parted lips in a partial smile, one hand showing and the other hand hidden - female submission. A picture is worth a thousand words.
Language spoken and listened to by all the human race. So many people instantly react to it but so few people actually understand what they are reacting to. We are told to trust our intuition but really we are just recognizing subconscious cues that are as old as humankind. We are so caught up in verbal language that we forget there are other more powerful and direct ways to get the message across.

You would only need to consciously use body language if you were trying to get a different message across than the one you were actually feeling.

It has its uses though, such as when you don't want to telegraph what you're actually feeling, or when you want to 'proactively' (hate that word) affect a social interaction or scenario.

Try mirroring some time ... it tends to calm people down.

@ BT Consciously try to get a different message across. Yes - I'm not an overly dominant person but I don't want people to bother me sometimes. It works.

@ Gaear - I don't have much of a problem about people being calm around me - I know about mirroring and I catch myself doing it unconsciously occasionally. I'm only provocative when I need to be .... promise :D :D

It's funny - I've seen smaller women in the corporate world dominate rooms full of 'big' men through use of body language, among other things. It really is effective when used intelligently (and it's kind of funny to see the guys cower and not know why ;)).
