Searching for an Adventure

Discussion in 'Dungeons & Dragons + Other RPGs' started by Silverblade, May 12, 2002.

A few friends and I are planning to start an 3E D&D campaign soon and I was chosen to be the DM, because I'm good at writing stories. So, I read the books (PBH, DMG, MM) and started trying to write an adventure. I soon found out that writing a playable adventure is much harder then writing a story, so I'm looking for an adventure, which is easy to play with lots of details and description and preferably some maps. I should add that neither I nor my friends have any experience with D&D, so I'm basicly looking for something easy to play, so we can get through the first few levels. Can anybody help me out with some links to sites with good adventures?

[IMG] I'd first go check the Wizard of the coast site. There have a whole bunch of old 1E and 2E adventures that have been updated to 3E that you can download for free. In addition have you done a web search for "modules" or "D&D adventures"? I remember seeing a lot of link out there. Zn addition you can buy many excellent adventures from any hobby shop or on the net. Just make sure to check to suggested player number and level for each.

My group writes all their own stuff and I'd be happy to give you some adive is this is the course of action you take. I'd also search SP for that topic for we have talked about it in this forum before.

Silverblade, if you have a storyline developed already, I could help you develop it into an adventure. The DMG has a lot of 'ready to go' stuff like traps, NPCs, treasure, towns, etc. The Challenge Ratings for monsters also really helps to quickly figure out what encounters to place in the adventure. If you want to go that route, you can email me and we'll work it out from there.

I've searched SP and didn't find much interesting info. But after searching the WotC site for I while, I've found some adventures that might be interesting. The only problem is that most of the modules are designed for 4 players or more. Well, i'll see how it goes.

    Thanks for the advice.

[IMG] How many players do you have? You can tone things down a little to fit the number of players in your group. If you only have 3 PCs you could always create an NPC to help the party out. If less then that you are out of luck. I don't think I've ever seen a module made for less then 3 players. Most as you have discovered are for 4 to 6.

And when I made reference to SP I was talking about advice for new DM's not modules.

If you have any questions on how much to reduce stuff by to suit your smaller group just let me know and I'll be glad to give you a hand getting use to the 3E system.

You can buy an adventure or just make some maps by yourself... You don't need to have very detailed maps. Also the Forgotten Realms Campain Setting might help you. Maps whole Faerun can be found online...

Well, there are three players and I did considered creating a NPC to help the party out, but decided to first see what for classes everybody is playing, because with animal companions and summoned creatures it should go a bit easier.

And I have the Forgotten Realms Campaign setting, but decided not to use it. In the begining of the book it is said that it might not be suitable for begining D&D players, so after we get a bit of D&D experience, I might decide to use it later on.

[IMG] We three PCs you should be OK in most situations. I wouldn't count on summoned creatures to save your bacon at first level since they are only around for one turn. If none of your players have any experience with 3E or even D&D for that matter I'd suggest a few trail combats so everyone gets the hang of the system before hand. No lasting character XP but lots for the players.

And you made the right choice on waiting about the NPC. Make someone who will help fill in the holes left by the other PCs.

Exactly. An NPC is much work.... a bit too much maybe. It's easier to make all things a little bit more easy then by letting them meet some less enemies or less strong ones, or by "arranging" a bit better equipment for them. The only problem can be when you have no cleric or mage in the party where you need them for something. Well, even that can be fixed with some creativity. :)

    Good luck.

[IMG] Headbanger, you have made some valid points about adjusting things to deal with a smaller party but I would still recomend a NPC. First off it is good practice for a new DM to make character and see how their power work in the system. In addition if the players are also new to D&D an NPC is an easy way for the DM to guide them in-game without being twinkish. If the party is doing well enough the NPC could always have an unfortunate accident.

I thought of that 'unforunate accident' before and it has some interesting possibilies. I don't know if the NPC should get killed in combat or not, but either way, he dies. If the PC's have become sort of friends with the NPC, it opens up great possibilities for other adventures, in which the NPC may be revenged or tried to be brought back to life (or the NPC borrowed money, which he never gave back, and the adventurers go get his equipement to sell.) I'll probably put in the NPC to help the party.
