    Good Day

As you can tell by the heading I've just met up with the Shadow Dragon. All I did was cast 3 spells on him and he died when the 3rd one hit him and they are all low level spells?

    1.Doom (Priest spell)
    2.Greater Malison (Mage)
    3.Chromatic Orb (Mage)

My Sorcerer was at lv 10 or 11 at the time and Chromatic Orbs then have the potential to kill a victim.

Four Paladins kill every dragon easily without the whole magic stuff!(well, maybe some defensive spells ;) )

Well Sephirot, i suggest you go and try beating Firkraag with your lonely paladin.
I like casting a billion protection spells then cast lower resistance and breach on dragon combined small and speedy magic attacks (melf's minute meteors and magic missile).Because Magic Resistance checks and rolls dice for each missile and meteor, he dies while my fighters engage him (along with a fighter of course, but he can be resurrected if he's not overwhelmed :D )

Or if you want a real challenge, just hack the Shadow Dragon's stats with Shadowkeeper: treble its hit points, raise its resistances and attacks... Makes the whole fight worthwhile.

Of course, you also tend to get killed quite often but it's certainly more interesting than hitting the thing a few times and it dropping dead.

And you got all those off without him attacking you? Even with items that reduce spell casting time, that's quite a feat -- especially since he attacks you on sight, short of his little speech before hand.

Unless you attacked him while he was still neutral but even then once the first spell fired off, he attacks.

Guess I've never been that lucky.

I think something is wrong with that Shadow Dragon. I tried using the cheese tactic about setting traps all around him with a thief, and then turning him hostile and he dies in a blink of an eye.

But the thing is, I noticed you only need ONE trap. IIRC, it did about 23 damage and the dragon dropped dead. What the heck... :hmm:

Spelladonna - If you've been noble, you get that wardstone that keeps the dragon from seeing you (and attacking on sight). Thus, you have time to prepare, buff, have a cup of coffee, surround him, tap him on the shoulder, and unleash a barrage. Piece of cake.

Even with the wardstone as soon as he is attacked, whether it be by spell or sword, he goes hostile. He's not like Firkraag who remains neutral for a while before he decides to finally attack. Could be just bad luck with the encounter.

Course this is coming from someone who just discovered that the s.o.b. drains levels. Imagine my surprise....

The Shadow Dragon is not the toughest dragon, but he's never gone down that easily for me.

He was the first dragon i met so it was the toughestof them all for me. I didnt know anything about all those cheese tac**** and i never laid traps at all. I didnt know he releases a wing buffet and dragon breaths.
So i kept dying for two days. :D

IMO dragons should be made immune to instant death and highly resistant to traps. Something for Improved dragons ;)

During my last encounter with the bastard (yesterday)I didn't notice him casting prot.from magic weapons. Result: Nalia killed him with a magic missile. The pathetic part: My paladin had the legendary holy avenger.
    I'm so ashamed :o

Blog, he died after ONE trap? Hmmm is there something wrong with your game? :D

Spelladonna, when I fought him (straight up, whole party, no traps/area effect spells/instant death spells) he hit my guys several times but no level drain. I didn't cast protection or have any items that prevented it either. Nevertheless, he was the toughest foe I had faced up to that point.

I'm playing ToB w/ latest patch, so maybe that has something to do with it.

I discovered his level draining ability when Minsc seemed to die for no real apparent reason. He was taking hits, but he still had plenty of HP left. It was then that I looked at the dialogue and saw that he had been level drained several times. Needless to say, I was irritated.

And was this after your party wore down his defenses and resistences?

Hmmm, something to consider - I think that he drains levels only if you play by core rules or tougher... ;) On lover diff levels his breath weapon doesn't drain levels.

I also noticed similar difference wheb fighting Iron/Adamantite golems. In lower diff levels I can employ the cheese to lure them into a doortrap and then attack them with a 2-handed weapon witohut taking any damage. well, it doesn't work at core diff level...

I'm positive I fought the Shadow Dragon on core and still no level drain. I checked the dialog and the character screens and there's no indication of level drain. Then again, I don't think he used a breath weapon on me (only spells, wing buffet, and claw attack). Guess I got lucky :D or my game is bugged :( .

I also beat the iron golem in De'arnise keep by getting him stuck in the doorway and hitting with a two-handed sword. I didn't get hit so no level drain, but he was no problem anyways. Hmmm . . .

Aldur, Chromatic Orb has the instant-kill effect at level 12, not at level 10 or 11 (petrification, essentially the same but no treasure). I tried the same combo many times but his magic resistance thwarted it every time. I beat him before I learned Lower Resist (a big mistake!).

It's possible that your characters make a save vs. Breath weapon. In that case you don't get the level drain... I think.

I had the experience cap removed, and my thief had at a very high level in Chapter 6. But still... traps don't have a save vs death or anything fatal.
