Is it possible to keep the bridge from getting destroyed? I cleared the map of monsters, but then saw it collapse for no apparent reason. The poles the ogres were hitting were no longer selectable, but the bridge collapsed with no help from anyone. I'm guessing this is part of the plot, and the DM collapsed the bridge even though I saved it...

I've had this happen in the past. Reload and try the Shaengarne Bridge area again.

You can save the bridge. When you enter the area you have a little cutscene that explains why the ogres are destroying it. From then on you have some time before the bridge gets destroyed. To prevent its destruction you have to make your way towards the end of the bridge and kill the ogres. On your way, Xuki the mage will try to get you to talk to her to buy the ogres more time. If you want to save the bridge you have to tell her that you have no interest in talking to her.
Once you've dispatched both ogres then the bridge is saved and the mission is successful.
It may be harder when you're soloing but it's definitely possible. Focus on the ogres, you can clear the map once they've been dealt with.

Try speaking with Xuki with a character that has high diplomacy or bluff: you can explicitely expose her ruse and gain 1050xp instead of the 525xp you get for simply ignoring her. Of course this is difficult when you are scrambling to kill the ogres while swarmed by dozens of baddies.

Here's a video example of how to save the bridge. :)

This is one of those scenes that is difficult and almost impossible the first time, but becomes easier and easier the more times you try it. Saving the bridge is not too difficult, but you do need to target the ogres sooner rather than later, and you do need tactics to minimise the impact of being swamped by so many enemies. Make sure you head straight for the bridge, to avoid bringing some of the wider spread enemies into the conflict. Any spells you have that can disable some of the enemies can be a big help.

OK, after much a-do I finally did it. :D

I don't think it's a high charisma buff, it's wisdom that gives you the option to detect that she is trying to stall you. It was convenient because my strategy involved sending my cleric in first to cast miscast magic on Xuki.
