Shield or double?

Well, here I go again with my weapon questions... What is best, sword and shield or two handed?
    I´m gonna use Crom.
Is it worth having only ++ in one weapon when using two weapons? ( two weapons +++, warhammer +++++ and , for example, flail ++ )
    ????

I say dual wielding is better than having a shield, because most of the time (once you get really proficient with whatever weapons you'll be dualling) your enemies will be dead before they can hit you enough times to make it worth having had a shield. Also, I've found that as long as you are +++ or higher with the primary weapon you'll be using, the off-hand proficiency doesn't matter that much...++ should be just fine in most cases.

On the other hand, I only use dual-wielding with single classed fighters. It doesn't pay off with fighter sub-classes or multi/dual classed fighters, because you can't get +++ in your proficiencies.

My best BG2 character ever was a berserker who dual wielded the equalizer and whatever other long sword suited the occasion...mind flayers and beholders(with the cloak of mirrors) were as easy to kill as orcs. (He also kept the skullcrusher and another mace for golem duty).

But I'd say that a good tactic with the crom faeyr would be to specialize in whatever weapon type you want as your primary, and not worry so much about hammer proficiency, since the best part of the crom faeyr is the STR bonus, which you'll get when you put it in your off-hand.
