I watched a show on PBS on the "Sinking City of Venice" for a few minutes, and I can't help but wonder why they haven't done anything to stop the flooding there. The part that I saw was when they were talking about how the Netherlands have coped quite well with the fact that they live several feet below sea level. Hey, if the Netherlands can keep the water out, why can't a city that is a few feet above sea level?

Maybe I should have watched the show a little longer, but oh well. If you saw it in its entirety please share your comments. :rolling:

[IMG] The City of Sacramento in California did something rather odd and clever to save itself from massive floods.

In the 1860s, the people of Sacramento physically raised every building 10 feet so they would be above the floodline.

I don't think it would work for Venice.

People in Holland build ...erm... walls around them to prevent water in and windmills to pump water out. Keywords here, water no in, water all out. Venice without water is not Venice anymore.

True, but if they don't pump the water out, then soon there won't be a Venice anymore. That's not the only problem the Italians are dealing with btw. The famous tower of Pisa will also fall over if they don't do something about it.

First of all, the Pisa's tower problem it has been solved some years ago.
For what concerns our sinking Venice, one of the major problems to solve is to find a solution that could respect the high esthetical standards of the city; this is something that foreigners usually forget when speaking about a great city of art that literally lives with turism. ;)
