I am looking forward to Skyrim as well. 2011 seems to be a very very good year for rpgs. Skyrim, the witcher 2, dragon age 2, mass effect 3. My social life will take a severe dive...

It looks awesome. There is an enormous 20-page spread about it in the latest issue of Game Informer. EDIT: In fact, the scans from Chandos' link are from that very article.

I really, really hope they do something about the stupid, overly-complicated leveling system in Oblivion. If they fix that, it'll be an exquisite RPG experience. That's honestly my only complaint about the series. I love the rest of it.

What's so overly complicated and stupid about it? It's quite simple to me: you use a skill and you improve in it. If you've improved it enough, you'll be able to improve the associated attributes as well (i.e., you level up). It certainly makes a lot more sense to me than receiving an arbitrary amount of experience points after killing something or delivering someone's mail and after reaching an equally arbitrary threshold, you level up.

The Morrowind/Oblivion system does tend towards grinding and extra skill management if you want to maximise your attribute gains per level. But it's not strictly necessary.

Anyway, that's not what I wish they would improve for TES V. No, I wish they would remove the stupid levelling up of creatures as you level up, which was going into the ridiculous in Oblivion. Fresh out of the dungeon it wasn't that hard to kill a couple of Daedra, which really shouldn't be so easy at that point. Conversely, it really bothered me that if I had a high level character, all marauders would suddenly be wearing daedric armor. You remember, the armor that, in Morrowind, you'd need to kill a plot essential character or had to scour the main game and the two expansions to obtain a full set of.

And to stop making the GUI trying to cater for someone who's trying to see what he's got in his inventory on a 15" TV from across the room. I mean, the icons and everything were positively HUGE in Oblivion. It was such a relief when I found a way to make it look more normal...

I do wonder what upgrades we can expect from the engine they're using for TES V. I understand that they'll be using an upgraded Gamebryo engine, which is kind of a disappointment. I like how easy it is to make mods for this engine, but it's got some issues. Bugs that we've seen from Morrowind all the way to Fallout New Vegas, wooden animations, too few animations. Maybe ID Software can help Bethesda out a little to polish it into something halfway decent.

We'll see how it'll turn out in the end.

I loved the fist 2/3 of both Morrowind and Oblivion but both dropped in frun quite dramatically when you had levelled up with some power in mind. Pimping out character is a lot of fun but when you have done it and done it well both games became a bit too easy and repetetive. Hope they add some nasty stuff in Skyrim.

It may make more strategic sense than more typical leveling systems, but that alone doesn't necessarily make it better, in my opinion. I love the overall concept of skills = progression, but there has got to be a better way to do it. I don't want to have to write down every skill point I acquire and/or waste my valuable gaming time training skills I don't necessarily want just so that I can get +5 stat bumps when I level up. I also hate that I waste skill points (in the sense of working toward the stat bumps I want) that I earn inbetween the time I get the indicator that I've leveled up and my next opportunity to rest. It's just a big pain in the ass and takes all the fun out of it for me. I want to quest, explore, get stronger, and be able to make intelligent choices about the stats I want to improve without having to work the system so hard. While I realize that not everyone finds it as tedious as I do, this is arguably the most common complaint about Oblivion, so I think it's fair to say it's due for a change. They could do it better and still retain depth.

This seems somewhat unlikely, given how the trend Bethesda have shown so far is to develop for the lowest common denominator, which certainly doesn't mean that they're going to make things very difficult.

Plus they would have to seriously redesign the combat for that to actually work. I remember mods in Morrowind that gave you more difficult opponents, but all it really came down to was more hitting to grind down absurdly high hitpoints and heavier hitting opponents. Basically, I don't think the combat system lends itself that well to difficult combat. There's also not enough variation in it to keep it interesting.

Aside from that, the werewolves in Bloodmoon remained quite a challenge, even to my fully pimped out character.

I have to say that I do agree with a lot of what your saying. Making sure that you get the +5s on level ups requires a lot of tedious administration and micro management that the game could do well without.

The idea behind the system is simple and intuitive, realisitic even, but the implementation of it leaves much to be desired.

If you make sure you get those +5 modifiers on every level up you will end up with an obscenely powerful character to which nothing is a challenge. That can be fun and I sure cant help myself from aiming at it but +2-3 is plenty when you level up to end up with a character capable of handling everything without too much trouble.

I have a Morrowind save going that I havent played for a year, bought it all with all addons and am at the end of hte main quest. Sure want to start bloodmoon but I am afraid that I have yet again levelled too much. I spend 80% of my ES gaming grinding skills and 20% questing so I tend to end up a tad too beefy too soon.
