Slang words (colloquialisms) that you use in everday life. List them and then give a meaning. No swear words.

My kids say things like this...

Far out Brussel Sprout!
Copy cat from Ballarat.
No way, baby.

I tend to say "peed" (deep backwards) when I think something is very unspectacular or if I am being cynical.

 

The most common slang word is "re".

It is adressed to someone followed almost always by 'decorative adjectives'. For example: "Re ilithie" is something like "You idiot". It does not have a translation in English. It's a unique Greek word.

 

If you want slang get into redneck ebonics. I live in Georgia, USA, and there is way to much slang to tell all, but here is a classic dinner speech:

Maw: J'eet yet - Mother: Did you eat yet?
Bubba or Mary Lou: Naw or Yea - Son or daughter: No or Yes
Paw: Y'awnt ta - Father: Do you want to?
Bubba: Naw or Yea - Son No or Yes
Maw: I getcha sim legs - Mother: I will fix you some chicken

No matter what the answer to a question about food the son or daughter will always get a plate of something put in front of them. Bubba and Mary Lou aren't slang just classic names for boys and girls.

As per Baezlebub's request, "yutz" is yiddish for "*sshole," or at least its equivelant. "Putz" means "dickhead." He he yiddish is fun!

My favorite by far is "Muthaf*cka." Not "mother f*cker," but in fact, "muthaf*cka."

Why? Because it seems to mean everything except for "one who engages in sexual congress with a mother." It has many uses, fits into almost any situation, and I daresay is the most versatile word in the English language.

Greeting a friend - "What's up, muthaf*cka?"
Extreme pain or discomfort - "Ouch! That hurts like a muthaf*cka!"
Stop, villain! - "Freeze, muthaf*cka!" (police officers only)
Extremely attractive - "That girl's hotter than a muthaf*cka!"
Shock, disbelief - "Muthaf*cka!"

And so on.

Colloquial speech and slang aren't exactly the same...

I sometimes use colloquialisms in formal situations (with special stress in pronunciation) for effect or for the fun of it, but as a rule don't lower myself to slang of any kind. I especially hate words spoken backwards, purposefully improper grammatical forms and assigning random incoherent meanings to existing words. I refuse to answer when addressed in such a way, or pretend not to understand even if I in fact do understand.

Swearing, swearwords and random verbal vulgarity are a different matter, of course. Still, some level must be maintained as the fine art of swearing does not rely on making a boor of oneself spitting random profanity in the widest possible radius

 

I did ask for no swear words, so please limit yourself to none whatsoever, not some.

I was actually looking for some regional slang, not so much a massacre of a language.

 

The expression 'lah' often accompanies every sentence uttered by the typical Singaporean.

As in: " Go and die lah!" or " I'm very tired lah!" Often used for emphasis.

Another expression is 'what', often used as a retort or protest.

" But I already finished the work here already what, why can't we go for a tea-break?"

Singlish (the massacre of the queen's english by Singaporeans) has many other aspects, most of which I really can't be bothered to explain.

 

Heh, I use so many weird words that other people often stare at me and go "huh?" over them... not because I find it "cool" or anything, but because it expresses what I want to say.

Examples:

"Kurppa" it's a kind of a bird, and expresses something bad, wrong, dissatisfactorial or otherwise negative. It's been in use a long time ago, when my sister was my age, and I have ressurrected it. Also, the form "Kurpelo" is in use... not a real word, but a twist of "Kurppa"

"Huba" anyone familiar with the Marsupilami knows that those weird animals say "huba". In my use, it means approximately the same thing as "grouse" Again, inherited from my sister.

"Crammy" on the other hand, is 'pure' Emglish... goes to the same category as "crappy"

And then there is the entire Deir-Ty Dictionary that makes people go insane when they have no idea what half of the things we say... Scrummy, spontaneous ovulation and craptaculous being examples

Hmmm...well, most of what I say is slang, so here are a few:

Word, Word Up = Greeting
Yo = Greeting/response to a greeting
Cap = Shoot
Fugly = F**king Ugly
Beat Down = to get beaten up

That's all I can think of right now...

 

After some thinking, here's words I often use instead of others. I'm sure there are more, but I can't be bothered to think of them.

Bajeeezah's! : Great phenomenon, Dissappointment or Surprise.
phwwoooaaar! : Not really slang, but another meaning of 'Wow!' or 'She/He is really pretty!'
Dopey : Silly, Dumb or 'Blonde' as some would say.
Kip : Sleep, Rest, or get to get knocked out. Ie. "He just got kipped, haw haw haw!"

 

Malaka: Means W**ker in Greek, or near enough. We don't do the hand thing but this seems to get used a lot. Not wierd, you may think, but i do live in south west England.

Minger: Ugly Girl
Swilly: Bloke who has fresh joined the army, or wears a baseball cap to go out in the evenings, unpleasent, greasey haired gimps. See also: Blazing Squad.
