I'm about to attempt a run through of SoA with Tactics and ToB with Ascension/Redemption with only my PC and my friend's character. I was considering a Sorcerer for pure power or perhaps an Assassin just for fun. Maybe a Druid; who knows?

Regardless, I'm curious about the Slayer. I know I'll need melee strength (more in ToB than SoA) and I want to know if I can fill that role with Slayer Change. I'll be playing evil so the reputation loss won't bother me.

How well can the slayer compare to, say, a Ranger/Cleric or Fighter/Thief, both of which I've considered. Also, any information on the Improved Slayer from Ascension would be appreciated. Thanks.

I think you die if you use Slayer change too often.
By the time rep gets to 2 you are dead.
Staying in slayer form for more than a few rounds is impossible, you are already dead.

Slayer change is only to be used in dire need. Dont think you can generally tank as a Slayer.

R/C rocks man. Or a Beserker/Cleric. These guys can easily tank. F/Ts are limited in the armour they can use until they get UAI.

But...(and this is a BIG but mind you), Fighter/Thieves get backstab!! They also get traps...so you CAN tank with them, only...with a bit more micro-management.

Sneak up to a group and backstab the mage...then start wailing immediately on the cleric, if any, or the nearest tank.

Berserker/Clerics are outdated, when compared with the R/C as the R/C can do anything a B/C can, except for rage...but in exchange, they get ALL those awesome druid spells.

    In simpler terms, Nature's Beauty+IronSkins+Insect Plague+Summon Fire Elemental+Creeping Doom>>>>>>>>>>>> Enrage.

Yes, the slayer is very powerful (melee-wise, it's more powerful than a single-classed fighter), but you should only use it for boss fight, since you will die after 10 uses of it or so (I haven't tested it though).

The improved slayer (and ravager) is more damage-resistant, and easier to control than the original one.
