As is being breathlessly discussed by superhero nerds everywhere today, Superman and Batman will be teaming up for a Man of Steel sequel in 2015.

Aside from the obvious continuity issues regarding Batman - who seemed to either die, retire, or otherwise end with the Nolan films, depending on how you look at it - can this work?

IMO, unlike The Avengers, for example, this could be problematic - mainly because Superman and Batman are on two entirely different planes, their shared comic book universe notwithstanding. And supposedly they will be kind of pissed at each other or something, presumably butting heads. If Batman had problems with Bane, ostensibly a 'regular' dude who was just super bulked up and very well conditioned and trained, how could he possibly hope to hang with an invincible guy?

There actually were minor issues with this in The Avengers, where Captain America could not really stack up with the others since he was comparatively underpowered, but they seemed to deal with that well by simply acknowledging it. (See Black Widow telling CA to "sit this one out" before the big Thor/Iron Man fight.)

This is all fantasy to be sure, so it's not that big a deal, but superheroes in movies tend to take on a bit more realism than in comic books. Will anyone aside from fanboys and girls buy this on a quasi-intellectual level? I have my doubts, though I'm sure it will kill at the box office regardless.

I thought the defining moment of Cap "being in the club" was the strike on his shield by Thor. He was the only guy left standing. It was a cool scene.

Batman and Superman might be a great combo -- the Man of Steel is still fairly naïve.

I bet that they'll have Batman wear Superman's glasses. That way, Batman will be able to go everywhere in his costume and nobody will recognize him, thus saving time wasted on changing out of his civvies (since unlike Superman, he can't just use a phone booth).

The main issue is simply Superman's seemingly limitless powers.

I find Superman to be a very boring character anyway as he's so overpowered. Matching him up against Batman is only going to make it look worse.

Slightly off topic, but that has always been a problem with DC vs. Marvel. DC heroes tend to all be vastly overpowered and Superman is the worst. Many years ago there was a justice league/Avengers crossover series in which they actually acknowledged this and kind of had the Justice League mock the Avengers universe as being a "low energy" universe.

Haven't they already worked together in comics?
