Indeed, Paladins are very nice with a Holy Avengers; the instant that weapon falls in your hands as a Paladin, I doubt that you will change to another one. Going for a Two-Handed Sword is great choice as a Paladin.

But keep in mind that sooner or later, you'll have to lay your hands on (no pun intended) a ranged weapon. It's really your choice - I'd go with a crossbow, but that's just me. A longbow, or even a shortbow are both just as viable options for ranged weapons. I really don't suggest a sling or darts for weapons.

And if you intend to face Clay Golems (which you most likely will), you will need a blunt weapon. A proficiency in mace or flail/morningstar is a good idea for a backup melee weapon.

(consider reading the Forum Rules; I don't think that your typing exactly agrees with them)

I'm kinda soloing an undead hunter right now (actually I also have a Elven Mage/Thief as a henchman - I'm not ready to go full solo just yet).
But that's it - a party of two. No NPCs. Pretty close, okay? :toofar:

    Anyway...
I started with all my proficiencies in long sword (since it's easy to get decent long swords), wield two weapons (he's a killer) and sling (for ranged damage when required).

Actually I don't use the sling much.

This works pretty well, but I'm doing the Keep D'Arnaise (sp?) quest early in the game because:
    ...1 - easy experience points.
...2 - I'm a fighter and the stronghold will come in handy.
Guess what? I'm assembling the Flail of Ages and I have no proficiencies in flails! Oops!
I am frantically trying to get levels so I can be proficient in the flail and wield it with my +2 long sword in my other hand.

Don't make the same mistake I did. The flail is a great weapon, especially early in the game.

    [IMG] * Proficiencies *
Start with Bow** and Two-Handed Swords**.
    Then take:
Flail** - for Flail of the Ages.
    Katana** - for Celestial Fury.
    Warhammer** - for Crom Faeyr.

    * Stats *

Str: 18, but there's little need for rerolls to get good percentile scores since you can buy a Girdle of Hill Giant Strength very early. When fighting dragon(s) it's nice - but by no means necessary - to have a high basic strength so you can un-equip the Girdle of Giant Strength and use the Belt of Inertial Barrier instead.

Dex: 18. While you can get the Gauntlets of Dexterity it will be harder to get that far with a very low dexterity and you can always use Gauntlets of Weapon Skill instead.

Con: 6. Buy the Girdle of Fortitude which sets Con at 18 each day.

Int: 11. Mind Flayer drains 5/hit and you die if any stat reaches 0. You could also choose 6 or 16. This stat is really not important and vs Mind Flayers you could use Int enhancing potions.

Wis: 8. I don't think Magic Defense Adjustment works properly in the game but 8 is still a low enough score.

Cha: 18. It's either 17 or 18, so you might as well make it 18.
If you have more points to distribute I'd go with Int 16 first and then raise Wis with the rest.

At lower level, you might want to get Keldorn's armor, Firecam. It's free, and have very decent attributes, use it until you can afford or have access to better armors.

Sorry to disappoint you, but that won't work out. Paladins get their own stronghold. Better than fighters' in my opinion.

As for proficiencies, 2-handed sword is a must and flail is handy as was mentioned. For bow vs. crossbow, bow is a better choice in terms of rate of fire but the thought of someone in full plate armour using a bow just seems a little, well, off.

@Earl Grey : Correct me if I am wrong, but IMHO WIS minimum for a paladin is 13, not 8.

Maybe a bit off topic - but when talking about paladins - where the hell is "my room" in the chapterhouse of the Radiant Heart ? There is only some storeroom with some containers, but I am unable to rest there. (Other strongolds allow you to rest).

Back - I think that the axes are not bad too - you can have 2x +3 early without problems, and one of them giving +1 WIS +1 CHR (nice for a paladin). There is also the nice throwing axe destroying undead. Not talking about the very nice one coming in ToB :D . Too bad there are no two-handed axes in BGII. I quite liked Sir Ulath & Sir Bevier with their huge Lochaber axes ;) .

The flag for resting never gets set for the paladin stronghold - Sorcerer's Place has a fix here.

When playing an Undead Hunter, I found that when dual wielding long swords, they can build up insane immunities (which could be quite useful when soloing)... although some of the more usful ones come towards the end of SoA.
