When your new class equals or exceeds the old class the old classes abilities are reactivated, although you can't advance in the old class anymore.
d stands for die, the munber after it being the number of sides to it, and hence the maximum it can roll, for example 2d6 means 2 six sided dice rolled and yeilding a result from 2 to 12.

Slight correction: I believe the new class must exceed the old class before you get the old class skills back (not just equal)...

You are correct, sir! At least using the rules up to 2nd Ed. You have to exceed your old class...Don't know about 3rd Ed.

In 3rd Edition, you have access to all your class skills, everyone multiclasses now, no more dual class. The only ones that are still like dual class are Paladins and Monks, where you can start with another class, but once you become a Paladin or Monk, you can't raise your previous classes, or you stop growing as a Paladin or Monk. You have full use of all classes, however, no matter what your level.

Couldn't remember if it was exceed or equal at the point in time of writing thet reply, thanks. And 3rd Ed. D&D rules are brilliant for multi classing, especially as there's no restrictions as to the combination.
