    I remember several years ago when we had an infestation of tent caterpillars. We had a rain barrel outside the corner of the house and we would have to scoop out the 6 inch layer of caterpillars that would settle there each day. It was disgusting and the rotting worms smelled awful. When we went anywhere in the car we would hear popping sounds under the wheels. They were everywhere.

    The tent caterpillars didn't cover bikes and ground with their webs like the caterpillars in the link however. If you didn't think about the source of the images, some of them are quite beautiful.

    Those are tent caterpillars, though maybe a different breed than you had, and North America has natural predators to keep them at bay (providing people don't kill them all off), but they can do stuff like that in a few hours if given a chance. Annoying little buggers.

    If you want more, though less disturbing, things, look here: Kudzu
    This stuff has invaded the south and, under the right conditions, can completely cover a parked SUV in a matter of hours.
