At the end of the game, there is a mage with Sarevok named "Semaj" or some such thing... Is he mentioned anywhere else in the plot like Tazok and Angelo... Or is he just there because they needed a mage?

Never noticed him mentioned anywhere else. Have you noticed how Semaj is James backwards. What relevance that is, I dont know.

How very odd, though I think they just wanted a mage at the final battle to "round off" Sarevok's party.

...and I think it's a good idea. And fits the roleplaying atmosphere -- tyrants such as Sarevok always have some evil supports who are skilled in the use of magical energy.

Anyway, I don't feel at all that Semaj is a 'forced character', they added good spells and contingency powers to him. I like Semaj.

It's another question though how easy he is to kill...

I wasn't saying that it was a bad idea- Not at all. Without him, you only really have to contend with melee heavy enemies... He makes the summoning approach to the battle a little bit tougher, requiring more preparation.

But yes, he is exceptionally easy to kill... Perhaps if he didn't try to dimensional door behind your party...

    Thoughts?

Actually he is easy to kill for the party only, so this is totally okay roleplaying-wise. (An experienced, well-equipped party)
Other creatures not having such powerful items as the player's party would have no chance against the wizard's powerful magic.
