Why is December even better in Holland then in other countries....? ;)
And why shouldn't you work in a toystore this month?

    http://www.kidsdomain.com/holiday/xmas/around/stnicholas.html

IMO, Dutch and German immigrants took this legend to the USA, where it was celebrated at Christmas.
Why else is that fat American fellow dressed in red and is he called Santa Claus (Sint Klaas/St.Nicholas)

Question to you people: Is there any event thats only celebrated in your country?

While a specific day or manner of celebration might be local, I think that the sentiments behind most holidays are universal. The US has Fourth of July, France has Bastille Day. Europe celebrates a Worker's Holiday on May Day, US has Labor Day in September. Both US and Canada celebrate Thanksgiving, but a month apart. I imagine that even the bogus "holidays" created by Hallmark are starting to spread beyond our borders (like a plague - sorry!).

Arbor Day? Veteran's Day? The opening of trout (or deer, or duck, or...) season?

I remember getting presents from that old dude, and always on 5 december, there would be a huge sack of goodies in front of the door..

Hmm, now I think about, my father always was taking a [insert unchristian word here] while Sint knocked on the door and mysteriously left..

Hmm, better go ask my dad about the fact he hasn´t showed up in 6 years and we got the presents 20 days later

I always thought Sinterklass is something typically Dutch (and also celebrated in Belgium). So, how do you call Sinterklaas/Sint Nikolaas in countries like Slovenia?

[IMG] Sinterklaas? Santa Clause, Father Christmas, Saint Nicholas(sometimes knickerless.)

Apparently he was originally dressed in green and changed to red by someone in America... Don't know if it's true.

Where doesn't that fat guy, that travels at light speed with magical reindeer, go?

    ...

    "The truth about Rudolf"

Rudolf had a red nose which is typical of female reindeer - so it should be Rosir, or Rudy, the reindeer.

If the speed of which the deer would have to travel the friction and speed would cause immense heat causing the first reindeer to inevitably explode and the ones behind to either follow there example, disintergrate or melt...

Being this Rudy the Reindeer will have a lot of ancesters and a lot of future deer working in her place. Meaning that Rudy No. 33452 will either be blown to pieces this year or become miraculously heat resistant and extra aerodynamic or provide explosive entertainment for sick minded kids and adults alike

In Greece we used to call him Saint Vasilios. He was one of the major figures of orthodox church around 400 AC. According to orthodox church his celebration day is the 1st of January, so I think it is obvious how he ended up to be considered the same person with nothern Europe's Santa Claus.

As for events celebrated only here, we many national and religious celebrations (28th of O ctober, 17th of November, 15th of August etc).

A little off topic about the reindeer. Both male and female reindeer have antlers. The males however shed theirs long before the Christmas holiday so all of Santa's reindeer must actually be female.

Which makes sense, only women could drive a fat ass around the world in a day without getting lost. Or so I've heard...

Of course St.Nicholas is known throughout Europe. He's a saint. And there where are Roman Catholics, there are saints.

But does Europe celebrate it just excessive as Holland does?
1 month (if not longer) before Sinterklaas' birthday (rather the day he died) our shop is black of people buying presents, they act like poets, children go crazy, candies everywhere, and of course the songs of the happy happy children.
And after Sinterklaas, we have 1 month left for Christmas.

So how does the rest of Europe celebrate St.Nicholas' day?

As far as I know, this is true. While I don't know that he was previously depicted in green, I have heard that the red and white costume we are accustomed to seeing was designed by an American advertiser in the 19th century and was modelled after the excessive dress of the Astor family.

Another question. Does Saint Nicholas also give presents to you in your country like the American Santa Claus does? Or do you think of him as just another saint?

Yep, we get presents on the 6th. That's the whole point. It's not like we'd celebrate it for our health. :shake:

And besides Holland, he also have to visit the rest of Europe... That can't be possible! I don't believe he even excists anymore!! ;)

Yes we have the holy man here as well and he comes at the sixth too.

At our school the eldest pupils dress up as 'zwarte piet'. They disturb the lessons, they have others participate in cruel games. (Ever tried eating an apple that's hanging from a cord and is covered with chocolate without your hands? Believe me it's not a pretty picture.) In other words: Great fun! :D Aah and next year it'll be my turn.

/me goes off thinking about original games.
