I started playing BG with chaotic good fighter/mage and I'm planning to take him thru SwordCoast and BG2. My question is when do I have to rest to gain special abilities (at least once every chapter)? What are special abilities of fighter/mage? My ussual route is AR 2600 -> AR 2700 (Imoen joins) -> AR 3200 (Kivan joins) -> AR 3300 (Beregost, do quests) -> AR 3800 -> AR 3300 (Kagain joins) -> AR 2800 (Kagain drops out) -> AR 2300 (Friendly Arm Inn, do quests) -> AR 3300 (steal Bastard Sword +1) -> AR 4300 -> AR 4800 (Naskel). So I went straight to Chapter 2 without resting. I'll be resting when Branwen joins, so I'll have a healer. Did I miss ability from Chapter 1?

    You haven't!
If you haven't gained "cule light wounds" ability then you will after some times of resting.
    And you shouldn't any.
Except for the last ones.If you rest to seldom ofcourse. But as you know you gain a new ability after each chapter for sure.

Previously I played as human paladin and was first resting in Beregost. I can't remember if I got "cure" at first or second nap. I'll try this on different savegames (I still have one from prologue and chapter 1). This game went so smooth and I had no need for sleep at all. Currently I'm elven l2 fighter / l2 mage, and most of my enemies die from arrows.

Are special abilities the same for all classes, races? I have to find that manual I lost years ago...

You get the abilities the first time you rest outdoors in a new chapter. If you don't rest outdoors for an entire chapter, then you will get the ability next chapter along with that chapters ability.

You can use this to your advantage, by lowering/raising your reputation to get the ability you'd prefer. <10 is evil and >10 is good ability.

IIRC, abilities depend on alignment, not on reputation. Lawful good gives cure light wounds, draw upon holy might and slow poison. Chaotic evil gives minor drain, vampiric touch and ? can't remember the third. You get 2 of each. I think true neutral gives one of each ability, so you get both good and evil ones.

Race and class have nothing to do with it, you needn't feel restricted by this, mistral.

Class and alignment are irrelevant in BG1 when it comes to your innate abilities. As bard says, it based on your reputation. He is a little off on the range though. You don't get the "evil" ability unless your reputation indicates you are at least "disliked". So the evil ability is for reputation 1-8 while the good ability is for reputation 9-20.

That having been said BG2 does do it based on alignment, and yes, a true neutral character would get a mixture of the good and evil abilities.

Sorry Aldeth, but Bard is right. Reputation below ten = evil innate abilities. At the moment I'm playing BG1 and I have experienced this myself.

Ditto for Heerscher - when my CE Thief rested before bringing in Brage, my rep was 9 and I got Larloch's Minor Drain. When I soldiered on and turned him in to the church for the money (and to spare my party from the fight, since they were all exhausted) and then rested after getting +1 Rep, I got CLW.

Rested 2 times so far. Once before clearing Naskel Mines and second time after getting to Friendly Arm Inn with Samuel. Got CLW both times.

My current party: PC(fighter/mage), Imoen, Branwen & Xan. At this point I'm fighting Bassilus and then I'm off to Lighthouse and to captain Brage. Once I'm back in Naskel Minsc will join and we will be travelling to save Dynaheir.

When did any of you guys got third ability? And what was it?
