How does everyone go about picking what type of Specialist to be. I find most often I don't look at what type of spells I use most often, but rather on what type I don't want to go without. Is there any particular bonus associated with choosing Necromancy over Transmuter? Or is it simply a matter of what you can't do.

Well, there's also some different stat minima for each specialist and not all races can be all specialists.
So, in your example, the differences are, Necromancer can't cast Illusion, must be Human and needs a minimum wis of 16, while the Transmuter can't cast Abjuration, can be either Human of Half-Elf and needs a minimum dex of 15. But you get no bonus to spells of the school you specialise in.

That's rather unimaginative. I wonder why they didn't do something like the bonus spells you get can ONLY be from your school or something interesting like that.

Do specialists have any advantage od difference to the actual spell effects though? like for example they cast their specialty school spells x number of level higher than normal or quicker casting time/better alacricity?

It feels like a bit of a rip off for all the disadvantages to have only one extra spell a level.

I'm pretty sure it's only one spell/level advantage.
