Hi, I've looked everywhere for this information and I can't find the specifics.

If I dual class, say, a level 9 fighter (importing from BG1 into BG2), to a thief--after I surpass the fighter's level and regain his abilities, how will my THACO progress after that?

Will the THACO score from the fighter be "renewed" to progress at a rogue's speed (every two levels now, instead of every level)? Will the THACO be just a level 10 rogue's?

Thanks for taking the time to answer, I appreciate it.

Your THAC0 will be appropriate to whichever class-level is most beneficial. By your example, with the ninth level fighter dualling into a thief, when he's ninth level as a thief he will still be following the thief progression and will have a THAC0 of 16. But when he levels up to tenth, he will regain the benefits of his fighter levels and his THAC0 will drop to what it was before the dual (9th level fighter = THAC0 12). It will stay there until the thief progression catches up (at 17th level), and then continue from there on the thieves' schedule. THAC0 progression stops at level 21, though, so the best you'll get down to is a THAC0 of 10. I would also suggest going for level 13 as a fighter for the extra half-attack (and THAC0 of 8).

More information on the workings of the 2e ruleset (used in BG1, BG2, & IWD1) can be found here.

The specialisation bonusses you might get are added to the better base thac0.
After dualing is complete you can even (unlike in the other games) add profiency points to weapon types you are already proficient in.

Dualclassing at level 13 is a powergaming choice, most of the game is over when you finally get your fighter skills back.

At the BG2-SoA XPCap a fighter13/thief gets 2.5 instead of 2 attacks per round and +2 thac0 compared to a fighter9/thief but he looses 10 HP and 100 thieving skill points.

If you have ToB your f13/thief will be additional 4-5 HLAs behind a f9/thief until 6,750,000 XP are reached.(You probably won't reach that many XP however.)

So you'll probably have more fun playing a fighter9/thief.

kmonster does bring up some good points. It's a tough decision. If you do wait until you're level 13 to dual, you'll have an absolute madman on your hands once you get his fighter levels back. That having been said, even a 9th level fighter dualled to thief will still be significantly better than a vanilla thief, or even one of the kits.
