Can anyone explain exactly what significance speed factor has on your character's combat abilities? I know from the manual itself that the speed factor is the fraction of a round it takes to attack with the weapon equipped, but does this mean if you have a lower speed factor you attack earlier, or what?

I don't think it is, bioware dind't follow the AD&D rules to 100% when the game was made. They took the parts they wanted so to speak.

Actually, I have seen speed factor affect how quickly you attack. Mostly as a function of Two Handed Style speeding up a slow weapon like a halberd. But speed factor means less and less the more attacks per round you have, because the combat round gets split up by that, and then there's less time per "attack round" for speed factor to be...well, a factor.

low speed factor is useful when wielding weapons with special abilities (slow, poison, etc..) since the lowest speed factor strikes first. Plus, against mages it means you can hit them before they cast spells.
