Spell Malfunction

    [​IMG] Can someone explain why the fifth level spell "Protection from Magic Energy" is all but completely pointless. I walked into the tactics dock lich with this and a ton of other buffs equipped and I was still dead in about 3 seconds. The skeletons had nothing to do with this, they couldn't see me (staff of magi). And this kind of thing happens all the time, sometimes even magic missile can make it through. Call me a scrooge but when I see the words 'blocks ALL magic damage' in the spell description I like to get what I paid for. Does anyone know how to make this spell worthwhile?

    PS: And "no", they aren't dispelling it first.

    I haven't the game installed now, but the manual says that Protection vs Magic Energy "only" confers 50% inmunity, and Protection Vs Energy at level 7 confers 75%.

    Now, whether this means that spells will fail 50% of the times, or that you will only receive 50% of the damage (which can still kill you) I don't know. Where's Fel when you need him?

    Not every damaging spell inflicts 'magic damage'. For example, Lightning bolt inflicts electrical damage and you should not expect "Protection From magic Energy" to protect you against it.

    Nonetheless, Protection From Magic Energy is one of the most useful defensive spells in the game. It makes you immune to the 8th level spell, "Abi-Dalizm's Horrid Wilting" which is a great immunity. Moreover, the spell has a long duration and its area of effect is not "the caster", which means that it can be cast on other party members as well.

    It's actually 100% (and 6th level), despite what it says in the manual, but it only affects pure "magic damage" as Sikret says. Protection from Energy, OTOH, affects everything (and is 8th level) with damage reduction of 75%. Which means that for every 4 damage you would take, you only take 1. Combine it with other spells and you can get immunity (or healing).

    This is exactly what I'm saying. It doesn't protect me from HW. It doesn't even protect me from magic missile all the time.

    Do you have the same problem with this spell even in a clean installation of the game (with no mods installed)?
