    Some major changes include:

-more differenced thieving abilities, the BG-1 stealth was split into hide-in-shadows & move-silent + there are some new abilities
-lot´s of new spells - you´ll much more enjoy to play a mage or cleric here
pretty differenced weapon proficiencies: First - sword & shield style is crap - there aren´t that many enemy archers around (unlike in BG-1) to justify that waste of a prof-slot ;)
-lot´s of good weapons, the nicest allround classes IMHO beeing longswords and maces. Tere are some exceptionally good katanas, nice flails and two-handed swords. You´ll either find some good armors.
-Another important change: The kits - they are specialised variants of an original class - and some new professions like the awesome monks, sorcerers and barbarians

    Good fun!

[IMG] - Missile weapons - although still good - are not nearly as dominating in BG2 as they could be in BG.

    - Monster Summoning is more balanced. In BG2 you can have no more than 5 monsters at a time.

    - Dispel Magic was all the counter spell you needed in BG. In BG2 this all changes! ;)

    - Weapon Specialization beyond Specialized (two proficiencies) has been seriously weakened in BG2!

If you're importing your original character from BG1 over to BG2 you could also complete Tales of the Sword Coast (TotSC = official BG1 add on) first to increase your characters stat's prior to starting BG2.

You could also complete Dark Side of the Sword Coast (DSotSC = unofficial BG1 add on) as well to improve your character further prior to playing BG2.

Neither option is neccessary btw :)

PS. There is a weapon proficiency patch available to bring weapon proficiencies into line with the correct AD&D rules. It's called the Grand Mastery patch or something and corrects the attacks per round that should be awarded for mastering weapons at higher proficiency levels.
