[IMG] I did a search but couldn't find a previous topic on this, which surprised me.

Does anyone know how Stealth is derived from Move Silently and Hide in Shadows? Is it just an average of the two?

Judging by how often my thief can hide
it is probably that way it works...

I also found this a bit bizarre when playing BG2. I paid attention to the description details of these abilities when leveling up (Thief classes)and there is a 'defined' difference. One involves Stealth via sound elimination while moving the other involves Stealth via skilled hiding within areas or behind obstructions. Both can fail allowing detection.

Moving silently is like a 'house cat' moving around slowly and silently when attempting to catch something. Hiding in shadows is like a chameleon blending in with the surroundings to an untrained eye.

As I understand it, 'hide in shadow' gets you there, 'move siletly' keeps you there.

high Hide / low Move = go into shadow easy, but pop out soon

Yes, I also found "stealth" confusing when playing BG-2. In BG-1 it was combined.
Basically I think it was made to prevent super-thiefs with 200 stealth or so for game ballance reasons.
It guess stealth was simplified in BG-1 because there you couldn´t get enough XP to develop a good (survivable/ capable) thief using this diffenrenced system, there.
In BG-2 there was no reason for this anymore, because you can level up high enough.
