[IMG] For most classes they have a stronghold quest
which are given to you by certain npcs and other characters. This is available in single player, Each sronghold generates 500g a weak or every 10 days. alows you to store items, rest, and also it normaly has events that determine if you get to keep it forever.
and depending on your class you also get some bonuses. I know for a fact that a fighter a Keep as his stronghold. For more info chek out any BG2 walkthrough.

Strongholds are available to every class, and with a couple of exceptions(fighter-monk-barbarian, Mage-Sorcerer), they are all different, offering different side quests and different rewards. This part is tricky, so read carefully. All stronhold quests are available to every player. However, if your character is not the proper class to recieve the stronghold, he will recieve a different reward instead at the end of the quest. Example: a fighter can go on the quest to recieve the planar sphere(mages stronghold), but he will not get it as his stronghold at the end of the quest. I think he just gets a lot of exp. The fighter can go on the fighter stronghold quest(Nalia's keep), and at the end he gets it as his stronghold. This then sets off a series of stronghold specific side quests for the fighter to complete, which offer rewards and exp. As a side note, if you have a multi/dual classed character(with both classes active), you can get BOTH strongholds that are available to both your classes. Example: a fighter/mage can get the keep and and planar sphere.

Most strongholds are just a diversion. They give little once they are acquired, but they are a nice status symbol and accomplishment and some have some interesting side quests and rewards.

If you go on all the side quests, eventually you will do the stronghold quest and get it as your reward automatically. Post your class and perhaps someone will be able to tell you about your specific stronghold quest.
