How does one protect from being stunned ?
And how can one get rid of this state? (without a dispel magic which rips everyone in sight of all their buffs as well)

I take it you're referring to getting zapped by Blasphemy or some such?

The Barbarian's rage, and other effects like Blood Rage, prevent stunning. Yet I never found use for those sorts of things considering the drawbacks involved.

If you're having trouble with Blasphemy, Power Word Stun, and the like in certain battles, a spell worth looking at is Holy Aura. It adds +25 Spell Resistance to every party member. Best part of all, it stacks on top of SR provided by Holy Avenger, or the Monk's Diamond Soul, or the Drow or Deep Gnome's spell resistance.

    Hope it helps

Rage? Never thought of looking at that, thanks.
But there's no spell to protect from stunning? (which is in fact a mental manipulation but none of the mental shielding spells seem to protect from this).

I like Holy Aura too, my cleric just got access to it. :)

And how does one de-stun ?
Freedom of movement and Remove Paralysis don't cut it.

Or is Stunning meant to be the "ultimate" disabling state with no way out but dispelling the whole act?

You're right, Remove Paralysis is not working?!?!

More on the matter, I couldn't find ANY single spell that removes or protect from STUN effect (hold person is different effect). The only spell I can think of to try with is Dispel Magic, but...

    Anyone else?

Please reply. This looks to me as bug.
If you agree on it, I'll add stun removal in Remove Paralysis spell.

I'm almost at the end of the game, but I'd appreciate a patch of Remove Paralyis. Thanks!

Back on the topic of stunning.

I think the 3E meant for there to be a qualitative difference between paralysis and stunning. Paralysis involves injecting something into the body or the use of magical force to hold someone still.

I think Stunning involves a sort of concussion type effect whereby the person is halfway between consciousness and being knocked out. Until that person snaps out of it or comes to, there's not a lot you can do.

Right, I think of stunning as a knock-out too, same as the one boxers get during the count to 10. Don't know how else one can be stunned so hard as to not be able to do anything for several tens of seconds. And that kind of stunning would not be possible via a spell, I suppose, only from a hit. And not any hit, only bludgeoning and on the head. And you couldn't stay standing in that case. I guess the Knockdown feat in NWN is real stunning.

But they don't handle it this way in IWD/BG, since a spell (actually ONLY a spell) can induce stunning. Which makes it a type of mental control or mental effect anyway like Confused (since the physically induced state would be Held or Paralysed I suppose). So it can be resisted, and there should be a counter.

There's a way to shield from any similar disabling effect, and to remove any effect. Why should stunning be the exception? I don't think it was done intentionally. They most probably just forgot it.

    Quint,

I don't know why you think only blunt trauma to the head will cause a stunned effect. Electricity, extreme changes in pressure or temperature, extreme pain, and a host of other itmes can all cause a person to be stunned. My understanding of being stunned is that a persons brain is so overloaded with stimuli that it basically shuts down for a while to allow the stimulis to pass.

I'll admit... I've never been "stunned" in my life! Have you? ;) (no I didn't mean by that girl)

The only real-life situation I've seen stunning in, is in boxing. I don't know the physiological explanation of the "stunned" effect. Please excuse my ignorance. :p But that is not the point of my post.

One would have to be an expert in linguistics and in medicine to make any sense arguing about the definition of "stunned" (and I am none of those) and to distinguish that state from the others in the game like Held, Parlaysed, Confused etc., so as to try and understand why that "stunned" state has neither protection, nor cure, while the others do.

    [IMG] Quint,

Relax buddy, I am not attacking you. You just said in an earlier post that you did not see how a spell could stun someone. That is all I meant te answer. I totally agree with you that it is a real pain that there seems to be no protection from, or remedy to, being stunned. I appreciate the insight you bring to the board, and as complete novice, most of the tips you have provided are actuallly valuable to me.

Sorry if I offended you. :)
