Swashbuckler – a Tudor or Elizabethan ruffian predisposed to streetfight and duel, so called by the "swishing" sound created by sword and buckler on the belt as the youth swaggered about town, the 1657 edition of Phillips’ New World of Words cites, "Swash-buckler" as a "Vain-glorious Sword-player or Fencer; a meer Braggadochoe, a vapouring fellow", and cites "To swash" as "to make fly about; to clash, or make a noise with Swords".

Swashbucklers were often nobles (usually minor nobles) who were bored with their courtly and/or pampered lives. They wanted adventure, and would go out, often disguised, 'having adventures.' An example of a Swashbuckler would be Zoro (I think), although he is not a real historical character, he should give you a feel for who they were. If I am not right here with any of this, please correct me.

[IMG] The first question was "who are they". I think we answerd that. About the "Why are they here" I would say - because they make a good addition to the thiefs, although they can't be actually considered thiefs from what I just read ;)

Of course they are thiefs, that the may be of noble birth means nothing about their attitude towards the law.

I think swashbucklers are simply too lazy to spend their time as a honest fighter or a serious, professional thief. They feel that a backstabb is not really honourable.
They choose the easiest way to live by what they steal for it´s better than work - or they choose most exciting way through life, seeking the thrill. IMHO they should be of chaotic alignment.

[IMG] They were thieves. They were also known as PIRATES. But swashbuckler is more pc in that they wernt organized and less ruthless. The British empire used them to fend off the spanish ships. They were thieves in that they raided those ships.
