After apparently causing a small meltdown on his stove, Richard Handl thought to ask the authorities if private experiments with nuclear fission, including possession of Americium, Radium, and Uranium, was prohibited. The Swedish Radiation Authority responded by sending the police...

Cottage Life has some advice for Mr. Handl, like Do experiment with molecular gastronomy. Don’t experiment with atomic gastronomy. :D

This certainly proves the old axiom of 'being armed with a little bit of knowledge is dangerous.'

I was wondering the same thing. Your local corner store typically doesn't stock uranium...

You'll be surprised, he documented most of it in his blog.
He got the Radium from clock hands (Radium was used to make these glow until recently, apparently you can still buy a lot of these in Ebay) and Americium from smoke detectors. He was going to used depleted Uranium (U-238) for his experiment, it isn't mentioned where he got this. Wikipedia does say that it's a common isotope and can be found in nature.
He didn't have a lot of the material. He was trying to perform a home experiment, so he only needed a little less than a gram. According to Fox he had just gathered all the materials he needed before he was arrested.

    Wow, just wow!

    Dude, talk about hobbies!
I mean, what does he tell his drinking buddies while they talk about hobbies??
One : I finished The Witcher.
Other: I'm modeling the Millennium Falcon.
Him: Hey dudes, I reached critical mass on my stove!

    Reasonably high intelligence score?

    Abysmally low wisdom score?

    Seems to fit.

Walmart and Radio Shack...You can get anything you need!

Another sad example of the man keeping us down! The private sector should be allowed to test and improve current technology - it's the only thing keeping us moving forward as a species.

But yes, melting down the stove was a bad plan... :D
