Is putting points in the sword-and-shield style slot worth it? You only get a missle bonus--it's not a bad bonus, but how often do you face missles?

Also: I assume that it works not only with swords, but with any one handed weapons wielded with a shield, right?

So sayI have a fighter that I intened to dual to cleric, and I want to use the hammer and the sling, and expect always to have a shield. Should I spend any points on sword-and-shield style? Or should I pump them all into my weapons?

it's not worth it unless the slot has to be spended on something like short swords or daggers (if you're fighter ofcourse). There is plenty missle protection in wearing plate armors and shields. There is the girdle and boots, that adds +5 versus missles I tihnk. Use it on something else.

If you choose 5 to hammer I think is good.
If you're not thinking of using any other weapon (ok, the sling, but anyway) then it could be worth putting slots into, though it will require planning, and you shoul plan before adding slots to the sword & shield skill.

When you can't put another slot on Hammer, Mace or Sling it's worth it. When you'll dual-class to a Cleric, it's good to have high ac vs. missiles so your spells aren't disrupted too easy.

Lokken, please do not take offence at this but i could not work out exactly what you were on about there. Were you drunk when you wrote it!!???
Anyway, on the matter of the subject:
It does not matter what weapon you wish to use. The proficiency is sword and sheild STYLE so it counts for any weapon used with a sheild. (including darts and slings)

So then the thing to do, maybe, would be to spend five on Warhammer, and two on sword and shield as a fighter.

Then, once I dual to cleric, spend all my points on sling and flail. I don't know how many total I would have by level 10, but at least three, right?

Then once I get my fighter back, I'll have five in hammer, two in S & S, and all the ones I spent in sling and flail as a cleric.

Not a bad investment. Should make a pretty strong character.

wait a moment are you going to dual at l;evel 9 fighter???
First of all you do know that if you do that you will only be able to reach level 19 cleric????
i would dual at 7 personally.

If you really want the two points in sword and sheild here is a little trick.

When you start as a cleric you will have thre points to put down. put one point into sword and sheild and then presuming you had already put one in when you started as a fighter you have two prof points :D

plus start as a berserker. They have no disadvantages that would bother you and hey are basicaly a fighter with the bonus of that excellent beserk skill :D

Avooch Dar: others on the board have told me that proficiency points do not add up cummulatively when you dual class. Once both classes become active, the game gives you whichever number of points is higher in a given slot.

In other words, if you have three points in warhammer as a fighter, and put two points in the same slot as you level up as a cleric, once your fighter skills return, you will have only three points in that slot--NOT five.

    Is that right?

Also, the reason I don't want to be a berserker is then I can never use a ranged weapon. Okay, so the sling is not so great, but it's better than nothing. Or is it . . .?

Manton: Even though you can't use slings/bows/xbows as berserker you can actually use weapons like Azuredge and the Rifthome axe (Which can be used as ranged weapons).

And I believe you are right about slots not adding up.

But you can't use thrown axe if you are a cleric. You can use a thrown hammer if you can get one. A human wouldn't be able to use the dwarven thrower, but maybe one of the others (can you throw the hammer of thunderbolts?). Considering you can get charm protection from items, I would agree that a straight fighter might work better. (A wizard slayer dualled to cleric would be interesting... probably not worth it though)

[IMG] ... the worst weapon style of all. A problem can be that it overrides some item protections vs missiles (like of the girdle of piercing), a pretty annoying feat.

    i hate this...every like 10 levels you get a profienciency point...that sucks!
