I've googled around about the subject, but info is vague.

Are the required RAM Megabytes really 512? No way with less?
Has someone tried on older machines?

(I do have 1 GB RAM, but I - as some might know - play in Sandbox VMs only, these days)

Actually there have been complaints on the official forums that the latest patches have made the game more or less unplayable even on 512MB RAM, so 1GB would probably be the sensible minimum to have. Since the number of people with that little RAM today is probably negligible, I doubt the devs are very concerned whether the requirement is 512 or 1GB - any computer bought in the last 10+ years should have at least that much.

Well, I use a 1ghz system with 512mb of RAM to play the original Infinity Engine games and have used it for over a decade, and have used that computer for nearly 15 years. I never imagined that I could play the "enhanced Edition" version on that old thing.
