i've decided to get an old set of D&D pen and paper. I know a bit about it but there's some things i'd like to know...
does the DM make up the story as you go along or does he read from a script.
or are the litle figures essential?

    thanks.

The DM creates the adventure before hand, the adventure world would be more correct. The players then decide what to do within the world, with the DM guiding them toward the designed adventure. The DM takes on the roles of all the creatures and NPC's the players meet.
The figures are not necessary, they are only used to aid the DM in determining where the players are in regards to the creatures/NPC's and what they can do.
The DM usually does not make up the story as the game progresses unless the players end up doing something that you have not taken into account or have not prepared for.

Our DM is prety well prepared, he usually comes up with in-game events and plot twists a few days-weeks before they get played, but sometimes, the story gets altered and made up on the spot. I wouldn't use a script for actual game play, it's too wooden, and seldom allows for imaginative ad-libbing. See my post about things I hate in newbie DM's. That was the results of someone reading our adventure from a book. Modules are great to get ideas from, and a good guide, but let the world unfold in your head.

A good D&D haven't made a ready story, but makes parts of the story. Some parts can be affected by players though. But when someone can give information about a small plot and the players decide to kill him instead of listening to him, they will not receive the information and so also not hear about the plot. So they will not do the plot. By such actions the story of the DM will be affected and so it will not always go like the DM suspects. As DM you have to be able to change your story during the game....

[IMG] Yes and Yes. Only normal conditions the DM (as described above) makes up the adventures and campaign setting. In addition the DM can run pre-made 'store bought' modules. These adventures can be worked into an already sxisting DM created world or played in a created campaign like Greyhawk.
