So ... in the background, I'm a veteran of taking on the Tactics, Sword Coast Strategems, and Ascension mods. Sometimes though, I just like a new experience.

At the moment ... I'm a bit divided over whether to install the part of the G3 tweak pack that allows you to combine a magic armor with a ring or amulet of protection, or another similar combination. Yes, its against 2nd ed. rules.

But ... its not against 3rd ed rules. There's a part of me that says, "Well, they went on to call it a deflection bonus anway, so why can't I call it that now, even though its technically 2nd ed. during BG2?"

And besides, I'm a battle-scarred veteran of the above mentioned mods, which adds another incentive I suppose. ;)

What do you guys think? Any opinions are welcome of course.

(Note that I'm in a similar quandary over the Item Upgrade Mod, but that's not part of this topic. :p)

If you are so troubled, just install the PnP part of it, the option of wearing the protection item with magical armor but only gaining the saving throw bonus, not AC bonus. This option allows you to use item's special ability to convert the protection item to a mere +1 (or +2 or more, depending on the item) saving throw item, but usable with magic armors. I have a similiar experience with mods and mindset so this is what I use in my game, without feeling gulty, but also enjoying the extra saving throw bonuses. (which is a huge relief due to spell revisions mod making high lvl spells truly scary.)

    Good points Silverstar.

I don't see this component as being game breaking.

I enjoy less "challenging" mods myself because I don't like having to resort to cheesy tacks or items (and playing Tactics without resorting to cheese must be incredibly hard -if not impossible at least for me last time I tried).

In the end it's (mostly) a single player game so there is no such thing as cheating, that being said, if you think that using this mod makes the gaming experience less rewarding then you should probably use the pnp version Silverstar referred to or simply skip it.

The problem is the same when one is bending the rules and since BG NPCs don't follow the rules (for instance Minsc shouldn't be a Ranger) why should we adhere to the letter of the rules and not the spirit of it? I used to feel bad because I used SK to make a Wild Mage/Thief MC but since it only made the game more enjoyable to me it was probably the right decision. ;)

I agree with the sentiments expressed in the responses thus far. If one has played through the game many times then it is one's prerogative to decide on how to make it even more enjoyable. Games are made to be enjoyed. Considering the above comment, my opinion is that the rules can be viewed as a guideline, or serving suggestion if you will :-). I'm really enjoying another run through even though I bent the rules quite a bit. The game will always be what you make of it...

^Exactly my thoughts Caradhras and OberonZ!

After playing so long, I decided to bend the rules a bit for sheer fun too. So I created a Cleric/wild mage with ShadowKeeper and a MP created character Blademaster/Thief. Ok they are overpowered, but much fun to play. It is not like I gave them godly stats or abilities, just kits for flavour and fun. And wow, it is FUN! :) Also, I have loads of difficulty enhancing mods and difficult quest mods to conpensate so I don't feel guilty, I am having a blast with my game, and this is all that counts. I seriously encourage you to do what you will and enjoy your game as you like.

Yeah, I figured it wasn't that much a departure from the rules, and in a way is in the spirit of the rules as 3rd ed. envisioned. Also, I know a lot of DMs always do their own tweaks and bendings with the rules to enhance their own campaigns.

    Thanks guys. ;)
