Well, I just want to share my current experiences, that could be useful to others.

    1. The game is running smoothly (crashless) on a fast new system (3 Ghz) in Windows 98 SE (double boot) with DirectX 8.1 or 9. I think now the VGA adapter is very important. Some "like" a version of DirectX, some "want" another. With my previous TNT2, it was DirectX 6.1, now it's a Radeon 7000.
    This is a full install.

    2. This is rather specialized, but I found you can reinstall Windows and keep your previous install of BG1 provided you installed it on a different partition! You just save somewhere the start menu links and 3 registry keys (using the export feature). Just search the registry for "Baldur's Gate" and export the keys.
Then, after you install your OS, you copy the links in the start menu folder (in Windows folder) and you import the keys, double clicking on the files. That's it. And I suspect it could work on an OS upgrade as well. Geek! :)
