    [​IMG] Help? I am in the second room of the temple sewers going up against a nast gang of mind flayers and an umber hulk. I'm dead within the first couple of seconds. Any suggestions?

    What level are you? Mind Flayers are tough without good armor... The best defense against both the Mind Flayers and the Umber Hulks is good armor, a good offense and the clerical spell Chaotic Commands...

    Well, the Mind Flayer area in the sewers is pretty tough for low level parties, but you don't NEED to go in there yet... You might want to save it for later since you probably don't have really good armor and weapons yet... There are a couple of good things at the end, but there are more Mind Flayers in there than you've seen so far... I'd explore the other areas in the sewer first.

    Oh... But don't lose that sewer key you have, or better yet just open the secret door but don't go in...

    Spoiler bout mind flayers in sewers

    you dont need to do the mind flayers part yet, but incase you wanna give it a shot, have someone memorise chaotic command (its the that counters all those spells) anyway it works well vs flayers(cast it on 2 attackers), you need summons(2 of em) now, open the door the umber hulk attack the summons the flayers will all bunch up near the door as well as kill the summons. keep your party in the room before, and lure the hulk, then you can kill him, then lure the flayers 1 by 1 and kill em like that. this is only for low level, i was level 10 doing this so my tactics had to be a little differnt. But it worked and something tells me thats how some battles were meant to be won, by luring the harder guys away. If i was level 13-15 i would have charged with potion of clarity...(which normally works)

    You know, I tried luring them one at a time with my stealthed Archer taking pot shots at them, but eventually they'd all come streaming out at me...

    Oh, well since you're new to all this, Mind Flayers are one of the more powerful monsters in the game.

    They have psionic (mind) attacks that can stun you if you're not protected and once stunned, one attack from them kills you. They also have an intelligence drain ability on a successful attack on you, and if you don't kill them quick after it starts, you'll be dead in a short while.

    The clerical spell Chaotic Commands (read the description) protects against psionics and confusion as well (Umber Hulks), but it doesn't protect you from the intelligence drain or the massive damage that Umber Hulks can do... That's why you need good armor in addition to the Chaotic Commands spell...

    well its a mix of both, i just completed this quest for the most part with my fighter, with the Fury and -10 ac, i did the lureing with him.. and then went alone into a room of 4 flayers (kill the umber hulk) and he killed em 1 by 1 (potion of invunrbility +5 to saving throws(cast prerification protection first) and you have pretty much a fighting force) and i was level 11 at the time.

    I did not know about the caotic commands, but I dealt with them anyway.

    My strategy was to summon and keep summoning diffent kind of beasts and animals and then stand in the background using ranged attacks.

    [​IMG] Cool. Thanks for the tips. I think I will just pass it by for now and come back when I have a little more power under my belt. I was off to the unseeing eye quest anyway. But, you have been most helpful, and I will try some of those tactics when I return.

    [​IMG] This is actually a pretty good set up here. I didn't know this place existed until one of my friends brought it to my attention. I didn't realize it could be so envolved, or that I could find a place to ask questions or learn about the game. That probably sounds silly to you guys who having been playing along time.

    Another rather simple tactic to avoiding the mind flayers irritating psi-beams is to cast a lot of pets/monster and let them take the damage cause a mind flayer will attack a stunned monster and then just pin them down with long distance weapons, easy and very rewarding for low level partys.

    I tried that once, but even with haste, I couldn't get my party member back before they stunned him and killed him. I have the wand of resurection, but I don't like to use it unless I am really close to winning a hard battle that I don't want to loose, and I lost a party member to get there.
