[IMG] In the Saughins fair city,
where the folk are so fishy,
I first met the eye of a Beholder - alone.
    His talk was so mellow,
    He's such a nice fellow,
    Must I kill 'im?
    Or can I leave 'im,
    Alive, alive-o.

Ahem, ok hopefully you get the point. If the only way to complete the mission in the underwater city is to get the drow treasure and kill the Spectator in the process I will be very dissapointed. It would have made for a great sub-plot to have a way to free the Beholder. Fact is I LIKE this guy and dont really want to do him in. Getting attached to a Beholder - blimey, I have been playing this game WAY too much!

Just have the person with the highest wisdom talk to him. I forget what the minimum is to have the option not to kill him, but it is indeed possible.

Thinking it's 16 or so. I know that 14 is not good enough and 18 is.

Haer'dalis and someone else (I think its Jan) can talk him out of attacking

[IMG] You need at least 13 wisdom to eventually get the option to look in the chest.

    I just said:
Why are you guarding a chest?
My master said Argh! my chest as he died, but he might have meant his own but I presumed it was this one
Do you know what is in it?
    No, I have never looked
So, you don't know what your guarding
Gee I would sure like to know, how about I look the other way while you open it?

    (Take what was in there)

That it? Oh well, might as well go, no point guarding an empty chest
    What will you do now?
Oh you know, check out the nearest hives for the girls, you?
    The same

    Something like that anyway

It also works with CHA of 18. So just give someone the Ring of Human Influence and talk to Spectator - follow the dialogue in the previous post - and you are OK. If you don't have high wisdom or CHA below 18, the last dialogue option will not come up.

If you follow the dialogue tree that 8people mentioned, the option to look in the chest is:
Did he tell you to guard the chest, or what's inside the chest?
    That'll get you your item.

Any of the NPC clerics can talk him out of attacking, or if your main has a high wisdom.

The most experience will probably be gained by talking to him.

The most experience? Talk to him, then kill him as he walks away. Whether you consider that fair or not, I don't know.

Talking to him was worth 15,000xp in my game, and killing him was 4,000.

You know, it's a real shame that you couldn't get the beholder to join your party, that would be sweet!

If you are willing to cheat, you can. Just Ctrl-Q him. Not sure how useful he would be, and this might screw up your game. Also, make sure your party isn't filled, or you have to leave someone behind. He prolly couldn't fit through some doors though.

Haer'Dalis is not the only NPC who can convince the beholder. If I remember right, Cernd and Mazzy can convince him too. (Cernd has 18 wisdom and I believe Mazzy has around 13, but the dialogue might be different.)
