[IMG] 1. I need an advise. My NPC is half-elf, mage-conjurer (is this choise not good, should I restart the game?). Which othes NPCs should I choose throuhg the adventure to create the best party?

    2. My NPC also doesn't have Identify spell (he's a conjurer). Other NPC who have this spell (like Nalia) are usseles. What should I do?

    1. It's a good choice, IMO the CONJ is the best Mage Kit. Keep Constitution at 16 by the way, you don't get bonuses for more than that.

    2. Identify at a temple or Shop, it's the only way. Or get Lore-Increasing Item.

One could argue that since Nalia can cast this spell and your current NPC (presuming mage, i.e. Edwin) cannot, then she's not so useless. Haer'Dalis has a very high lore value and can identify just about anything that comes his way.

Identifying at shops costs 100gp/item so unless your fairly well-to-do in gold, that can get a bit expensive, especially when the item you had identified isn't worth 100gp.

[IMG] There is a new faq on this site made just for choosiong NPC's. It depends on how you want to play. Generally, well rounded parties will include a magic user, a cleric/druid, a thief, and at least one front-line fighter. The remaining slots can be filled by NPC's that can are well rounded themselves such as multiclassed characters or bards.

At the beginning of chapter two you can purchase or steal the glasses of identification. The vendor is upstairs from where you find yourself at the start of chapter two. This item will identify three items per day.
As someone stated earlier, Haer'Dalis can identify items through his lore. He is also usefull as a backup spell caster. You may wish to have him learn identify, in case you find an item with a high lore value.

I always found the identify spell to not be needed. You'll find more cash in this game than you know what to do with. You can afford to identify items after each quest. I would not choose an NPC based on their ability to cast identify.

That said, how do you intend to play this party? Do you intend to powergame and smash through everything or do you intend to roleplay and take companions that your character would most enjoy adventuring with?

As CUE recommended, the glasses of identification are the best investment a non-identifying party can make early on in the game. It will save you hundreds (literally) :p .

Forgive my stupidity. It took me 20 or so games before I even realized that Gaelen had an upstairs.

If you have Edwin after the Nether Scroll quest his lore is a lot so he can identify most stuff, but just because you can't use the spell with your Pc is no reason to start over. The glasses of Identification can take care of most things.

Well if you are quite taken with the kit you have selected already, I would suggest Haer Dalis (spell?) who has excellent lore. Since you are short on fire-power, I would suggest a couple of strong NPCS like Minsc, Keldorn, Korgan, Anomen (who is also dual-class cleric...very helpful), and maybe even Jaheira who is actually kind of weak, but there are things that can improve that and she's part Druid. Have a thief. They are very handy. Yoshimo, Jan, and Imoen. Maybe Viconia who is an awesome cleric. Really you should decide your party based on alignment. You don't want everyone whining about someone else, do you?

glasses of identifying is always a good idea, invest on it.

Aerie can also memorize the identify spell, she's a mage/cleric so she might be useful as a backup mage and provide healings as well. imo, minsc is the best all around fighter. right from the start he already has two slots in most of the better weapon proficiencies, but he may be fun or simply annoying to be with. it's up to you weather to keep him or not. but i always have him in my party. i find keldorn very usefull. anomen is good (and can be better... if you do his quest) but he annoys me sometimes. having a thief in the party can add a lot of fun, so get one.

You can get a second pair of Glasses of Identification through one of the one-time Limited Wish spell options.
