[IMG] Check this out. Personally, I can't wait for this technology to become publicly available. It'll save millions of trees. I'm sure paper will still be around aplenty, but this should cut down on its use significantly.

They have talked about this thing for a few years and it still havent made any significant break through. I know I myself am rather skeptical. I like my paper newspapers, they got a special feel to them. I also wouldnt want yet another thing to lug around, I mostly read papers when on the train or in the bus and after I have read it I leave it there for someone else to enjoy. What might interest me more is if they put those things in trains kinda like the screens they have on the back seat of airplane seats.

I also think the cost of such a thing would be a huge deterrent. Sure you would probably save money on it in the long run but it still feels rougher to spend 200€ once than 1€ twice a week. I would also assume that it wouldnt be free to download magazines and news.

As for the tree saving thingy I think we should concentrate no the people giving out direct advertisement, I get a few kilos worth of ads in my mailslot every week and it is all paper. Someone should stop them bastards first.

Did you actually read the article I supplied? And it won't be that costly either, once it starts to get mass-produced.

As for junk mail, you can only blame your postal service for not giving you an option to opt out of receiving it. Here you can buy no-junk stickers at every postal office. Slap it on your mailbox, and postmen know they shouldn't deliver you any junk mail. There's still a small amount of junk mail not delivered by postmen, but you can avert the brunt of it this way.

Well, we do have those, but that would force me to walk down to the postal office, get the sticker, walk home and put it up. That is a lot of work there. Hereabouts most of the junkmail is delivered by other people than the postal office as well. I personally dont mind it that much, it is just to throw out, but considering the amount of paper I think they should try to do something aobut that before the news papers.

I did read the article and the 200€ might be a bit off but they never did give a price there either.

The Dutch news said that Philips expected the price would be equal to the price of glass E-lnk screens. Whatever those are..

I don't see the disappearance of paper-newspapers and books in the near future. Paper-books are just perfect to read on a couch and newspapers are just right next to breakfast at the table. Technological gadgets I think will be used for looking at rather short texts about a specific topic you want to read at that given moment. Just like the things googled. I can't see that they replace something as practical as paper, they have to get the comfort of it and be similar good to the eye, what computer screens aren't at the moment. A 3 pages news-paper article or 100 pages of a book read on a screen, my eyes hurt just thinking of that.

Paper newspapers are a pain for commuters. In London they are gradually replacing the big broadsheets with tabloid sized papers but even these are still too big. I would love to be able to read an A4 sized electronic newspaper - but i can't see it becoming economical and mainstream for several decades yet.

But that's the weird thing about new technology. It comes in much quicker than you realise. Think of the things that we didn't have only 10 years ago...(the World Wide Web for one, MP3 players, text messaging, photo phones, video phones, interactive digital TV etc etc).

Who knows? Maybe this electronic paper stuff WILL take off....

Small correction harbourboy, text messaging is very old, since DARPA and the universities began to use networks.

OK then - you're right most of things EXISTED 10 years ago but weren't used by the general public. Just like this electronic paper (and that proton teleporter thing they have invented).

Plus the text messaging you're talking about is more like Instant Messaging. I was talking about messaging on mobile phones.
