Yet they changed the name! What's with people and changing the names? I mean, really, what was wrong with the Northern Lights?

Anyway, it was certainly a fun series, look forward to seeing the movies, although I'm expecting to be disappointed.

American producers. Sounds better with a rare metal in the title ;)

Anyway I'm definitely looking forward to the movie. "His Dark Materials" was one of my most read series ever.

I finished the trilogy just recently. The trailer actually looks quite good so I've got high hopes. Imo though the 3rd book wasn't very good. I felt really let down at the ending, of why Lyra and Will were so significant..

I'm speaking very generally, so there's no spoilers :p

I can't take this seriously ever since i heard they were dumbing down the God theme in it, which practically ruins the whole story.

Haha, this will be a joke without the whole anti-religion thing... Dust = power now, not Dust = sin, the Church is now the government... it is becoming about fascism instead of religion. It is now pointless to make the movie.

I couldnt agree more Saber, although im still gonna go see it, just so i can see how bad it is without the Sin. Actually, i might just do something that cannot be spoken about here, and then laugh at the changes.

I stopped reading the trilogy about half way through the second book.

Northern Lights totally absorbed me, but The Subtle Knife just bored the crap out of me.

I bought the first two books on a whim when I flew back to South Africa recently. Needless to say, I bought the 3rd yesterday, and will finish it soon.

The first was really, really good.

I do wonder what they will do with daemons. I mean, look at Doom the Movie. All references to Hell and demons were taken out. Will the northern lights suffer the same fate?

Rotku: I don't think they actually changed the name of the movie/book, I'm pretty sure I've seen the same book published as both "Northern Lights" and "The Golden Compass" in bookstores before.

Possibly a US/UK/rest of the world thing, or different publishers?

Of course, maybe I just remembered wrongly.

probably a case of this, like when discworld novels get crap covers from U.S publishers.

Anyway, saw it this afternoon. It was okay. Far from being crappy but a far cry from being good also. The acting wasn't too bad except for Lyra. She was okay but there were some parts that just seemed really forced. Daniel Craig and Nicole Kidman were awesome though. And Ian McKellen and Kieth David's voiceovers for the bears was spot on. I could hear: "I... am VHAILOR" in my head :D

Haven't seen it yet, probably going to during the weekend. Looks like it would be quite good. I'm not sure whether it is good or bad for my enjoyment that I can no longer remember most of what happens in the trilogy.

okay, with no spoilers, heres what should give a general outline of what I thought of the movie, I'm quoting my reply to someone who bashed the movie without reading the book.

Saw it last night. Was a little disappointed with some parts of it (primarily the acting of the main character during some scenes, the large fight scene and the reduction of the sin element), but overall, it wasn't too bad. I'd go and see the sequels.

Fair but not good enough to see in a cinema. If they would have taken just a bit more time to develop te scene's. If they just would have put a bit more effort in bringing the plot. if they just put a bit more effort in the surroundings and general scenery. IF then, it could have been a hit, now it is fair.

Is this the movie for the family to see? Mom, dad, 2.5 kids, parking, refreshments? Almost, but if there is nothing else to do why not.
