To serve has a reminder of where we came and this eternal truth about men. In the begening each men longs to get out, afterward men longs to get back inside

Because embryos are "female" at conception, later on developing into boys or staying girls.

Basically, girls are Human V1.0, while boys are Human V2.0, but we still carry some legacy features that we dont need anymore.

If we are going the medical route instead of the comedic or philosophical then the belly button is simply scar tissue from the umbilical cord as opposed to the spot many people use to put spare hood ornaments and jewelry.

kuemper may be correct on the nipple thing -- although I've read fetuses are androgynous until about week 14. The nipples are developed before hormones kick in to develop gender specific parts.

    Aack!!! I WAS a GIRL?!

So my question is, why is it that navels are kinda like a ditch when the umbilical cord is cut several centimeters from the belly?

    Ignorant dude here :geezer:

Since no internal organs (except some basic structure from which your organs will grow) are present in the first couple of weeks of an embryos life (basically, they're just a lump of cells) and certainly no male or female specific organs, I'd opt to call them androgynous, rather assign a sex to them. Although technically their sex is of course determined at the conception already, by their DNA.

I don't know what exactly causes the belly button to be either inward or outward, but I'd suspect that the cut off length has nothing to do with it. Young mammals usually still have some remnants of an umbilical cord hanging from their bellies, which will eventually fall off like a scab of sorts, so it seems unlikely that the cut off length has anything to do with the appearance of your belly button.

Even if we are androgenous for a few weeks, that wouldnt explain why males have nipples unless the default gender were female.

It doesn't explain either why we need longer hair on top of the head than in the rest of the body. :p

That logic is flawed. It's more like the default template has nipples, even though only females seem to have any use for them. It's not like it's the only feature of the human body that's seemingly without any purpose. Like the appendix (or vermiform appendage), or the last bones of your spinal cord, which are believed to be a reminant of some long lost tail.

    /edit
Or why men need more hair than women. Even though women are generally the ones to complain about the cold ;)

Those things once had purpose though. We once had tails.

But men, of any mammal race, have never needed nipples. I dont think its a stretch of the imagination to say that they are only useful to females, and that their inclusion in males is accidental at best. so they are a female feature.

besides, if I remember correctly, women have 2 Y chromosomes and men have one Y and one X. So we deviate from them.

I thought women had two X chromosomes, though I'm fairly certain men has both an X and a Y chromosomes.

    Yep, Link, I was right.

If a man gets jacked up high enough on enough estrogen he can lactate... I think.
