I stumbled across something that didn't happen my first time through the game. Eric really-long-last-name who comes ot help fight Bodhi has a lovely little sword which sets off fireballs. And as soon as the first one goes off he promptly blames me, saying I attacked him and I lose that advantage...and while I know I don't really need them, they are kinda nice to have around. So short of trying to pick pocket the sword before the battle, is there anything else I can do. A patch maybe?

    hmmm, I've never encountered that.

You could cast Protection from Fire (lvl 3 priest spell) on him 3 or 4 times so that it would actually heal him when his Fireball explodes.

Or, you could keep him from attacking much by fighting all the vamps he's fighting.

    I don't know.

If you really want, cast a disabling spell like Hold Person on him so that he can't move, but his buds can.

If none of that works, just don't use the Paladins. I mean, do you really need three different groups helping you?

His name's Eric Vanstraaten. Harbringer only has a chance of releasing a fireball when used. I too had him accuse me of attacking him. This bug has been fixed, I believe, in the Baldurdash fix packs.

I'm sure it has, since last time I played that part Eric helped me out and that didn't occur.

I don't think you are allowed to pickpocket people for their main weapon and armour.

This is pretty common actually. I think you'll just have to grin and bear it. Just use the paladins as vampire fodder by running away while they're in battle. Then they'll do their share of damage, get killed, and you can sweep up the mess.

How good is Harbringer? If it worth killing Eric and looting his corpse for?

IIRC it's a two-handed sword +3 with 5% chance of launching a fireball centered on the target on each hit.

Since it's two-handed, there's some good base damage already. You do get hit from the fireball though. Now if it was a Sunfire spell centered on you, that would be wicked.

5% chance is pretty small though. Chances are it won't trigger when you want it to.

You can also buy unlimited Harbringer swords from the Drow Merchant in Chapter 6.

Are you sure it's not Har binger ?

Harbringer isn't a word, but Harbinger is. It means "One that foreshadows what is to come". It's kinda like an omen. It tends to mean something a tad sinister.

heh, pardon my typing. I'm a good speller but a bad typer, so I have a habit of letting letters slip past because I'm going so fast.

anyway, thanks for all the advice. I just got inbetween him and the vampires until he accidentally set it off and killed pretty much all tjhe paladins and thieves, but hey I still had Drizzt, so what more could I possible ask for? :)

[IMG] There is a patch to fix it so that the Harbinger sword will not detonate while Eric Van Straaten wields it.

It is at this site about halfway down the page.

The name of the sword is most definitely "Harbinger", the name of the demon whose essence is bound in the sword. However, some sources, such as the Official Strategy Guide and me in an earlier post, mistakenly refer to it as "Harbringer".
