With all the 'heavy' topics in whatnots these days, I thought we could all use something with a little more levity ;)

Did I say that the human is the most intelligent being in the whole universe, in the 'I hope it's true'-topic?
    Did I realy say that?

I get the impression that he made it up when he walked past the bank. If you plan such a thing you must at least think about that they will be able to track you down. He must have the IQ of a pinguin or something like that.

That's pretty funny. Indeed, it's good to see a lighter topic nowadays in Whatnots.

Well, I can think of people doing even stupider things, that must have an IQ lower than a donkey.

It is nice to see a lighter topic in lieu of all the serious ones we've been seeing recently.

[IMG] Actually Rastor, some of the most intelligent people in the world are the ones who do the biggest blunders. I suppose its because their mind works in a different level that their bloopers occur in a spectacular fashion too. I can't claim to understand, but we once had a speaker from MENSA who touched on the topic, saying something like his logic works differently at times that sometime during or after implementation, the realization creeps in that it could have been done in a more practical way.

I am reminded of that story where the scientists at NASA spent at least a million developing an ink pen that can write in the 0 gravity of space, while russian cosmonauts used a pencil.

Or the story I read in Reader's Digest about this group of MENSA people who were going sailing to study marine life (or whatever) and couldn't leave the dock because none of them knew how to work the sail.

I'm not saying this particular fellow is a genius, but not all spectacular mishaps are made by people who

Ok, this comes from a NASA brat.

You know why NASA didn't use pencils like the Russians? Pencils have to be SHARPENED. Even if you use mechanical pencils, the leads can break. Tiny bits of lead floating around a cabin full of sensitive equipment and delicate surfaces IS NOT GOOD.

It isn't something most people on Earth really think about, since everything is sucked towards the floor. But think about what would happen if all the dirt and dust on the ground was floating in the air? You could get splinters in your eyes, in your nose, or the cloud of dust could get into the vents of your computer and fry it. Little slivers of pencil lead could find their way into a computer case and fry the shuttle controls.

This is the same reason some of the astronauts' food is packaged in plastic envelopes and is in a semi-solid form. Food that would produce a lot of crumbs isn't allowed because of what would happen to all of those crumbs : they would float around and be a pain in the rear (not to mention potentially dangerous to the mission) for the rest of the flight.

Space presents a lot of problems whose solutions sound pretty stupid back on Earth.

Back to being on-topic, this guy must be in the off-season of a brain cell timeshare.

Here's another one. I like a year ago so i might not excatly repeat it :( :

The storekeeper went to get something with his car(for more than an hour) and his assistant was keeping watch over the store.
Then the assistant felt hungry and went to lunch but he left a note on the doors for the storekeeper when he returns:

I went to lunch and i'll be back in about an hour and a half.
The key is under the stone at the doors.

I dont know if i wrote everything i should but the main part is there :)

Hey, Astra, why Russians didn't have that problem? And why didn't they used that pencil sharpeners that collect the splinters, like the one i used in school. And they could develop one that is more reliable than that one for regular use for less money.

And why don't they use vacuum cleaners in the space shuttles?

Sorry for being off topic, but I didn't want to open new topic for this because it is probably stupid idea.

    astra,

here in the philippines, we do have a japanese-made pencil that doesn't require sharpening and doesn't break under normal circumstances. the most popular brand was Bensia, and costs around US$0.15.

the "splinter" issue is probably true, but imho, it's a very lame excuse to spend millions for a zero gravity ink. i mean if they just offer to give half a million dollars to anybody in MIT to come up with an unbreakable pencil that doesn't require sharpening, that would have been a more acceptable approach.

they were able to use practical approach in solving the food crumbs problem, why can't they do the same thing with the pencil? no offense, but i think the reason you have stated was just nasa's cover up for something stupid. there better be a more justifyable reason than that 'coz i ain't buying it.
