Its funny how Rice talks about how she suffered in her younger days, but will not stand up for the rights of others.

The reason the US reversed it's stand against the initiative is that it would have given UN and the poorly named "World Court" oversight over accusations and issues pertaining to the abuse of gay rights. The US has never, historically, submitted to UN jurisdiction over anything that it couldn't significantly direct through the Security Committee. This article is poorly written and is almost an outright lie by linking the US non-support of this measure with gay repression.

    windmills.

Oh dear, because now it's sort of a breach of every single human's human rights if he doesn't hear gay lib babble every now and then. Like all the time.

The need for GLBT support to what end?

Then move. First, the EU is not a superpower. The EU does not dictate how we in the US do business -- in fact, the European market has nowhere near the influence to US business as the Asian market does. Your comment about the EU outnumbering us on every international committee is only true if the US has one vote. In that you are assuming that our allies do not vote with the US on major issues and that is not true.

The US has more political clout from it's financial base than military. Only the aggressive 'third world' nations fear the US military. The US pretty much dominates trade around the world and as such has the greatest influence in world financial policies. I'm not sure what you are referring to whan you state the EU dictates how we do business.

On the political front, the majority of human rights issues are brought up by the US and their allies. It seems to me we pretty much defined the policies. There have really only been a few items where others have taken the policies to the next level.

One additional item, whether or not people believe it, politics is about compromise and knowing when to back down on a relatively minor point in order to gain ground on major points. The situation with Iran is quite sensitive. To offer support for their initiative in this helps ease the tension.
