[IMG] Sometimes I like to amuse myself by thinking that maybe some mythologies have a tad of truth in them. The stories have been told over and over and eventually written down, because they have had a great significance at some time.

It was documented that some of the survivors of the recent tsunami were members of tribes which had stories of the sea-god or somesuch getting angry and these stories entailing information how you knew when the sea-god would be angry. The tribe members saw the signs, and did what you do when sea-gods get mad. They escaped to higher ground.

So what if our familiar mythologies have some spesific meanings, which escapes the modern man, since the danger the stories warn about are no longer ominous?

Another thing is to combine these legends to give your description of past terrifying events more weight...

Consider the Prometheus myth, in short: Prometheus gives fire to humans, angers the top honcho of the deities, is chained to a cliffside (in Hades?) and a bird comes to eat his insides.

Combine this to Adam&Eve story using these elements: A&E are cast out of paradise and an angel is set to the gates of Eden with a fiery sword...( Ok, some of this idea's from Good Omens, but what the hey...)

What if in the history of mankind something like this really happened: Humans get fire, from the heavens no less(lightning), human uses fire in excess, in result humans burn up the veritable paradise they were living in, and have to move eastwards.

Now considering that the Sahara desert used to be a lush, forestated area with lots of wild animals, and it's now a desert...Not trying to make a serious point, but an interesting one maybe. Could it be possible that such a thing has happened?

And now it's your part. Pick your legends. Weave your version of events now unknown to men. Get at it!

Definitely a grain of truth in mythology. I think it is Bill Moyers who had a series on PBS about this. When it comes to heros probably several different heros got combined and magnified. We all know how a story grows in the telling.
