[IMG] Hi Everyone I was wondering is it really worth having a thief if you have Minsc on your team, since he can pretty much bust any lock he comes across. also are there any NPC thieves in the game apart from Imowen. I'd like to hear your thoughts.

Except from picking locks thiefs can also pick pocket, disarm traps and be the party scout, so thats why you need one.

Imoen is not the only thief around in BG1 heres the rest

    Safana (pure thief)
    Skie (pure thief)
    Montaron (fighter/thief
    Coran (fighter/thief)
    Alora (pure thief)

[IMG] I genrally find getting Khalid to run into potential trap areas and hopefully getting him to set them off works just as well as detect traps, and since I have 3 healers in my party as long as he doesn't die I'm fine. I mean call me insane but it works :D

Hey Elvenblade you missed the coolest thief of them all second only to Montaron; Tiax, the ruler. He is a Cleric/Thief. The lousiest multi-class of them all because then you can't backstab.

[EDIT]Actually, the two three-multi-class-combo's sucks even harder than that one.[/EDIT]

He is cool. I love his banters with Quayle and his total madness. Which he would have been in BG2 together with Kagain, Montaron, Shar-Teel, Xan and Quayle of course.

[OFF-TOPIC]Elvenblade why are you named Elvenblade if you comes from Dorn's Deep? :p [/OFF-TOPIC]

[off-topic] There were once an elf child named Elvenblade who got lost in the mountains around Dorn's Deep. There some dwarfs found him and took care of him until the day when the orcs and the undead came there and ruined the place. After that he has lived there alone in a small cave only with his computer and the happy people at Sorcerer's Place as a friend. THE END. Now you know why Rutkowski ;) :D

Or even better to my names thread in SS. :)

As for thieves, my favorite besides little Imoen has got to be Coran. He can do some sweet things with a bow (20 Dex, IIRC) and once I have him in my party he becomes the lynchpin of my combat tactics. He's the one who, under cover of tons of monsters, shoots down all my tough foes. I have never bothered with any of the others (except maybe Montaron, who I send off to die early on  )

I always thought the point of having a theif around (besides the obvious of checking traps, picking locks, and picking pockets) was so that you can actually do all the Theive's Guild Quests in Baldur's Gate (the city) but maybe you don't actually need a theif for that? Has anyone done the Theive's Guild Quests without having a theif on hand?

Also I always take Imoen and by the time I get into Baldur's Gate I've gotten her the Ring of Invisibility -- Highly useful.

Some NPCs have special abilities and stuff that makes them better:

Imoen: First NPC to join you, can dual into a mage.
Safana: Charm person once/day (useful in BG1. Wonder what exactly she does?)
Montaron: You meet up with him pretty early.
    Skie: Nothing special.
Coran: Awesome archer with 20 Dexterity.
Alora: My favourite thief because of her cuteness. Very good at pickpocket and pick locks.
Tiax: Summon Ghast once per day.

I'd say take a thief even if only half of one (multiclassed) There are some locks that might be a bit too much for Minsc to break, and the key holes are too small for Boo to crawl through. :p
