Thoughts on Dune...

i just finished the dune series for the fourth time in a row(not counting previous times)and i was wondering what you all thought of these great books. personally i think frank herbert shouldnt have killed of thurfir hawat at the end of the first book as he would have made a far better ghola character than duncan idaho because he was a mentat and an assasin. so what do ya'll think?

 

Well, I liked Dune and its immediate sequel, but I didn't care for the others. They, well, they just didn't make sense in the series. The major gripe I have with the series is that Dune was transformed into a normal planet. It kinda ruined it, as Dune was almost the last frontier. It was meant to test anyone's and anything's endurence. I wasn't meant to be a luxurious planet.

 

I think the first book was one of the best Sci-Fi book ever written. The second one was OK, but after that they started getting real weird. By the time I got to Chapter House I just could not take it anymore. I'll alway like the first book and the movie but as a series I'm not a big fan.

 

I loved Dune and hated the sequels Frank Herbet should of quit when he was ahead. Has anyone out there read the prequels yet? The Hawk and Fisher books by Simon R Green are good fun and well worth reading. Life from the point of view of the city guard of a really corrupt city in a fantasy world.

 

i disagree, the only really bad sequel was the last one(forget the name) but the children of dune was utterly brilliant and god emperor was not that bad either.
whats this about prequels? what are they like? good or bad?

 

They're worth reading - full of plot and not as rambling as the last Dune books, but not as meaty as the originals. Some of the plots are a little transparent and you have to suspend belief at one or two points though - almost like you can tell where FH stops and the other two kick in, but like I say, worth reading.
