Thoughts on the pregen parties?

when I first played IWD2, I gave up putting together my own party and just went with one of the pregenerated ones. I think the whole 3 INT min/max thing started to bug me, and I thought the background stories included with the pregen parties were an interesting way to think about the characters during IWD2 (maybe I was trying to reclaim a bit of the feel from BG2, where the characters mattered). I appreciate the interesting issues which go into UPPs, but found that using the pregen parties could also be challenging, through pumping up the difficulty, as well as fun to think about, in terms of trying to build something out of non-optimal characters and parties.

For example, most of the pregen parties seem fighter and rogue heavy, and light on spellcasting. This would encourage giving the party rogues a new vocation, as well as developing one or two of the fighters as spellcasters. This leads to interesting building issues as most of these hybrid characters would have to start with, say, a 12 in their new spellcasting levels.

In any case, I was just curious whether anyone else had thoughts about making something out of the pregen parties. The builds wouldn't be ultimate builds, but I found it was fun to try to make *optimal builds* out of what the game provided...

Wish I could help you here, but I've never used em, and hardly spent more than a few seconds skimming over them. I agree that the min/maxing parties tend to be dull and unbelievable at times. But I usually just think up a theme of my own and create my own parties.

Yep - it is an interesting question but I had too much fun starting up my own parties.

The pregenerated parties are good examples of how to create nice custom parties. Typically un-powergamish and let the toughness feat testify ;)

Typical of veterans, I prefer casting-heavy parties. IWD series is practically the only one where I run non-casters.

What I did once and found to be quite fun was importing charcaters from the pre-generated partys and putting them together into my own party. For instance, taking a member from the Hands of Fury and then from the Annals of Halgren and just throwing them together for a bit of laugh. I find the pre-gen characters quite challenging. To me the charactors are more realistic, believable and more capable of good roleplaying. Not a svirfneblin monk in sight!
