To Dual or To Multi that is the question...

[IMG] Note: I am aware that I may have stuffed up the correct number of HLAs under discussion. If you can help with correction I would appreciate it.

After some consideration of the pros and cons of dual or multi classing I turned to the concept of HLAs. Playing a gnomish fighter thief gave me the most insight. Sometimes the gap between when a level up in fighter or thief is due can be as small as 20000xp, which means 2 HLAs fairly quickly.

    So...

I decided to calculate the actual number of HLAs available with the xp cap of 8 million. Generally, multi classed characters can gain almost double the number of HLAs that dual classed characters can attain, despite only achieving just over half the maximum level. They also get HLAs at a lower level and so it "feels" like they are getting them earlier.

I was pleasantly surprised to find that the triple multi classed characters can achieve in some cases more HLAs than dual classed characters.

I have all the details and I would like to add them here. There is only one problem. How do I get this interface to make a table? I can't simply make one in Word and then paste it in.

I also would like to confirm that Clerics begin to gain HLAs at level 20 like the manual states.

As an example with the xp cap of 8 million a multi classed Fighter Thief can achieve levels 24 Fighter and 28 Thief. That means 11 fighter HLAs and 12 Thief HLAs. The HLAs are earnt at the same time also.

A dual classed character Fighter to Thief can achieve levels 25 Fighter and 27 Thief. What's the difference?

Not only are the HLAs earnt at the respective past the 3 million xp point in each class, or very late in the game, but they are much fewer. The Fighter class gets 6 HLAs and the Thief class gets 4.

A dual classed Thief Figher can achieve levels Fighter 25 and Thief 26 with respective HLAs of 6 and 2.

So you can see that Multi classed characters gain a lot more HLAs, at the expense of some other things, such as gaining levels quicker, kit + pure class options, weapon grand mastery and higher levels.

It will all depend on your playing style and character preferences, but if you really want more HLAs in total, then multi classing is the option for you.

[IMG] If you have any handy tables or docs which will help players get the most out of any of the games featured here, you can always just email them to Taluntain and he'll put them on the site. That way people can access them any time without searching through old forum topics and you'll have the gratitude of many :) .
