Top 10 Rock Bands/CDs of the 1970s

This is similar to the other thread on the 80s. But rather than rip-off Kitrax completely, this is a little different. Choose 10 bands (instead of 5) and rather than five songs, choose their best CD released in the 1970s - only one. There are no other restrictions or fine print. You can choose any band, singer, musician, songwriter you wish (with any kind of hair). I left out some good choices: John Lennon, Paul, George Harrison, The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix - even though they recorded in the 70s, they all belong to the 60s, I think. But some may think differently, since they released some great CDs in the 70s.

10. Heart – Little Queen. They are the rock goddesses of the 70s. It came down to Heart and the Grateful Dead for this slot. But the babes take it.

9. Van Halen - Van Halen. This is still one of their best, even though I thought they were better with Sammy. Yes, flame suit on.

8. Pink Floyd - The Dark Side of the Moon. There are probably no questions here. This is the 70s.

7. Bob Dylan - Blood on the Tracks. One of Dylan's best in any decade.

6. The Cars - Candy-O. One of the quintessential bands of the 80s released this rock masterpiece in 1978. The cover alone merits it being in the top 10.

5. Jethro Tull – Thick as a Brick. These guys were great musicians and just so original.

4. Boston - Boston. One of the best CDs ever cut. These guys probably spawned more musicians than Van Halen.

3. The Who - Quadraphenia. It's better than Tommy, IMO. I almost went with “Who's Next”...but not quite.

2. Led Zeppelin - Houses of the Holy. This was really the tough one. It could have been just as easily any of their other great CDs from the 70s.

1. Yes - Close to the Edge. To some they may sound a bit dated, but IMO they are one of the best rock bands ever.

I'm not sure I could come up with ten, but one glaring omission IMO was Meatloaf "Bat out of hell"

PS. they didn't have CDs back then.

 

See, they're McDonald's, we're MacDowell's. They have the golden arches, we have the golden arcs. They have the Big Mac, we have the Big Mick! Totally different!

3. Paul McCartney and Wings - can't think of the name of the best album
4. Led Zeppelin - Houses of the Holy
5. John Lennon - Imagine (was that the 70s? if not, then something else. He's a legend anyway)
6. Aerosmith - one of the early ones, with Dream On on it
7. Cat Stevens - Teaser and the Firecat
8. George Harrison - must have done something good in the 70s
9. Michael Jackson - Ben

I can't think of one more without doing more research or just choosing some rubbish that Ringo might have released.

The above songs are the ones that warped my mind, making me the demon I am today.

 

Yeah, Fleetwood Mac would do for a number 10 for me.

 

HB - "Band on the Run?" How about Harrison's "All Things must Pass?" I'm almost certain that was released in the 70s. Ah, I see kuemper found it already... sorry.

I know that but Judas Priest's first album was released in 1974 so they count as a 70s band, something that cannot be said for Ozzy and Iron Maiden (unless if you consider the "Soundhouse Tapes" as their first release) . BTW, "Ace of spades" was released in 1981 and "British steel" in 1980 .

 

Ozzy's first album was released in 1979 so it's 70's.
Songs on "Iron Maiden" were written in 70's but 1980 it's still 70's (01.01.1971-31.12.1980= 70's).
And Ace of Spades was released on November 8, 1980 so you're wrong about 1981.

You are right about "Ace of Spades".

70s (1.1.1970-31.12.1979). Let's not start argueing about this, we will never agree.

 

Blizzard of Ozz was released in 1980 not in 1979 (checked on offical site).
And I will not argue about borders of the decade (although I study history and all those teachers say that the decade starts like in my post above. You know that XXI century started 01.01.2001)
